Dec 23, 1955---Oct 09, 2021

Rev. Peter Glenn O’Sullivan, 65, priest of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, was born December 23, 1955 to James F and Margaret R O’Sullivan. He faithfully served as a diocesan priest for 38 years. He died on October 9, 2021 after a brief but brave battle against head and neck cancer.  He was a beloved brother, adored uncle, teacher, coach, mentor chaplain and friend. A talented storyteller and compelling, but relatable homilist, he was truly a humble servant.

When recently asked what his goals are, he related, “I just want to help people.”  The outpouring of stories about Pete on hearing about his death show he met that goal.  Pete did the little things that matter.  He attended countless sporting events, visitations, hospitals, hospices and homes. Yet, he never talked about how tirelessly he worked.  He continued to meet with parishioners as he was able up until he was hospitalized himself.

Pete grew up in Shawnee, Kansas where he was salutatorian of St. Joseph High School class of 1974. He was a star athlete playing on the offensive line for football and doing hurdles in track. He was an All-State football player and was selected to play in the inaugural Shrine Bowl and later gave the invocation at the 10th anniversary game.

He received a football scholarship to Washburn University where he played until an injury his junior year.  He was getting his degree in mathematics, history and education with plans to coach and teach.  From there he went to the US Marine Corp in Quantico, Virginia. During Lent that year, he attended Mass every day at 6 am in the morning where he discerned his vocation. He attended St. Louis University where he received a Master’s in Theology.

Pete was ordained at St. Joseph Church in Shawnee, Kansas on June 4, 1983. He served as a deacon at Annunciation Catholic Church in Frankfort, Ks. His first ten years as a priest he also taught at the local Catholic high schools where he served.  His first parish was Christ the King, in Kansas City, Kansas where he taught at Bishop Ward High School for three years.  From there, he went to Topeka at Assumption and St. Joseph parishes. While in Topeka, he taught at Hayden Catholic High School for four years.  Next, he was pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Nortonville and Immaculate Conception in Valley Falls while teaching at Maur Hill Academy for three years.  Next, he was sent to St. Pius in Mission and then to Emporia, where he served both Sacred Heart and St. Catherine’s Parishes and helped both with new buildings.  He returned to Topeka at Christ the King and then was reassigned to Queen of the Holy Rosary in Overland Park, Kansas. He was serving at Holy Trinity parish in Paola at the time of his death.

Pete was a straight shooter. He enjoyed a good Cabernet or an IPA.  A lifelong athlete, he discovered golf as an adult and became hooked. He is a former marathon runner and took to walking after a knee injury. He loved cooking and smoking meat, trying out his own recipes on the family at holiday gatherings- some with more success than others.  Pete liked a good game of trivia and was known to spout off events that happened on a particular date years ago. His family provided the source of many of his sermons and they ask that you remember that Pete had the gift of blarney. Pete could not sit still and was always on the move. He was known to be a big fan of whatever team KU happened to be playing. His collection of jerseys and hats is renowned.

He ministered to a group of nuns originally from Mexico at St. Benedict’s Abbey in Atchison and was able to travel with them on a pilgrimage to Mexico.  While in Emporia, Pete convinced their Mother Superior to send some sisters to minister to the large Hispanic community there. Pete could communicate with his Spanish-speaking parishioners and was also fluent in sign language. A true Irish Catholic, he was fortunate to go to Ireland on a family trip where he visited the town where his grandfather was born.  He always carried a rosary in his pocket.  “I’ll tell ya what” - he was one of the good ones.

Pete is survived by his siblings, Janet (Dennis) Cawley, Margaret O’Sullivan, and James (Kathy) O’Sullivan and their progeny, Debbie Moeller, Carolyn Cawley, Michelle (Chris) Masoner, Jennifer Cawley, Meredith (Chris) Mays, James P. O’Sullivan, Remi, Mack and Hollis Moeller, James, Paul and Maggie Masoner and Giles and Fiona Mays.

All services will be at his home parish of St. Joseph Church, 11311 Johnson Drive, Shawnee Kansas 66203.

A Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 PM followed by a visitation till  8 pm on Sunday, October 17.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am on Monday, October 18.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests the following charities: Pete was a champion of Catholic education, please consider a donation to one of the following schools where he taught or where his nieces and grand-nieces and nephews attended or are attending: Bishop Miege High School, bishopmiege.com, Bishop Ward, wardhigh.org, Maur Hill Academy, mh-ma.com, Bishop Ward High School, wardhigh.org, and Hayden Catholic High School, haydencatholic.org.

May God rest his soul and may perpetual light shine upon him.

It us with heavy hearts we send our condolences. We loved Fr. Pete and were privileged to have him as dinner guest to outdoor bar-b-ques. We loved his homilies, especially his tales of growing up in the O"Sullivan household. Our favorite is the one he told about how his mother left the task of preparing Fr. Pete's lunch in her absence, to his sisters. It is a favorite with many in St. Pius. Imagine delivering a homily that is remembered years later. Amazing! We miss him! Rudy and Rosemary

I will always remember Fr. Pete as being a good listener without judging. He also gave time to my mom when in Emporia, especially after she was homebound. His visits always cheered her up and she was especially thankful for his blessings. May he rest in peace.

Father Pete, taught the religious education class when Tamara joined the church before marrying Mike. His teaching and guidance was key in helping Tamara transition into Catholicism and even taught Mike, a Catholic since birth, a thing or two. He also guided our pre-marriage journey. We thought so much of him, even though we lived in Lawrence, we took the opportunity to attend his sermons at mass in Topeka and Paola. He always remembered us and was happy to visit after mass. We are so grateful to have had him in our lives and are better for having known him. May he rest in peace with Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father.

Oh Father Pete, how I’m going to miss you. You were the best priest ever. I heard you referred to as a real person’s priest. Couldn’t agree more. In high school you always wore the coolest sweaters and I remember asking how, if you took a vow of poverty, you always had the best sweaters. Your answer was that when the old priests dies, they put their clothes outside their room and since you were the youngest priest and the fastest…you got there first abd always took the goods stuff. (gift of blarney but I was too young to know it). Imagine me telling everyone that story only to get called to your office and you explained it was a “story”. I remember telling you it was a lie and you better go to confession. How we laughed but I still tell that story all the time. You made being Catholic fun. It was always real and your homilies were so easy to understand. In your homily at our wedding, you talked about being asked back to officiate and that you were always pleased to seeing your students didn’t grow up to be axe murderers! Enjoyed our Friday afternoon beers in Aggieville when you were up visiting your nieces and cheering the Cats to a win at the Copper Bowl in Arizona. Oh Father Pete. Thank you for coming and seeing my mom when she was in the hospital. Rest In Peace

To: The Family of Fr. Pete - My name is Jean Smith. I was receptionist at Assumption Church ⛪️. I really enjoy him being one of my bosses. He didn’t sleep upstairs in his bedroom. He slept in the living room because of his back injury playing football at Washburn University. So he was always losing his car keys. When he slept in Fr. Moran’s recliner the keys would fall in between the arm of chair and cushion. And it always happened when he was going to play ⛳️ Thoughts and Prayers- Jean Smith

Rip now Father Pete time to be glorious in your eternal reward for all your service to your fellow man and woman on this earth. I will never forget your kindness when I lost 4 babies and you agreed to do graveside services three times for me and my family. No matter what you were doing you could find the time to be attentive to your parishioners or even fellow human. I remember being surprised that you were doing a graveside service for a fellow military friend of ours as that "was the right thing to do" even though he wasn't Catholic. I wish I remembered more of you from when I was a student at Hayden High School other than that we were younger and thinner then. Thank you for all you did for me and my Ctk Topeka family.

Child of Parents Who Loved Pete! ,Manhattan ,Kansas

I met Pete thru my parents, Louis & Mary Wempe of Emporia. They loved spending time with him, included him in many meals, attended KSU games with him and he and my dad traded their Irish/German banter and jokes non-stop when they were within earshot. Pete joined my parents at my San Francisco home for Thanksgiving in 2000 or 2001 when he was on sabbatical at Stanford and it was lovely to get to know him a little better. He also said my father's funeral mass and made an incredibly sad day much better with his stories. I know my mother would want to send her own condolences but she is now 94 and in a nursing home. She will be sad to learn of his passing. Rest peacefully Pete - I'm sure my dad and you are sitting somewhere enjoying each other's company by now.

I'll tell ya what. Father Pete was a special guy ... a one in a million. His homilies were usually short and to the point. He said what he was thinking and did not mince words. If he thought there was a problem, he said so. I loved him for that. He was a dear friend and will be greatly missed. I'll tell you what Father Pete, I miss you already! I bet Heaven is amazing!

Father Pete was truly one of a kind. He was a great teacher and did much to mentor us unruly teenagers at Mail Hill. One of my fondest memories was him showing us how to hit the 7 man sled at football practice. He had perfect form, even in his priestly attire! He was a great man and I loved hearing his many stories. My condolences to his family and many friends.

So sorry to hear of his passing. Didn't realize he was ill, or I would have made an effort to see him one last time. We shared the same Birthday, so every year I bought him a bottle of wine, and tried to have a meal with him. He officiated at Dennis & I's wedding in Feb. 2007. I will miss him terribly. Our Condolences to His Great Family Members! tri

To Family of Fr. Pete-Our sympathy and prayers for all of you and eternal rest for the soul of Fr. Pete. Jake worked as a volunteer at Christ the King, Topeka, for approximately 5 years when Fr. Pete was our pastor. Jake really enjoyed and related to him in a very comfortable way and was always ready to help when needed. He had a lot of respect for Fr. Pete in the way he related to people. I feel Fr. Pete had a total love of the Eucharist because when he gave out Holy Communion it was always in a special gentle way. Grateful for his life and for being our pastor. God Bless All of You! Always felt bad because I gave Father my Mercedes. I learned later it wouldn't run for him. It kept stopping. This never happened to me. He told me he had to finally get rid of it. He gave me a beautiful Rosary that I absolutely treasure at the time of the car titling. Well my Rosary works but the car didn't. Father I still feel guilty. He did like the KS quilt we made him. Love you so much. Please pray for me.

As was said before Father Pete was one of the great ones! When we first met Father Pete we loved his homily’s, short to the point and packed with true meaning! Father Pete presided over blessing us on our 40th wedding anniversary. He joined us also at our home for brunch. We were blessed to share food with Father Pete for lunch and dinner. We will truly miss our Father Pete! He is with our Dear Lord surrounded by angels. We pray for you Dear Father Pete and we will miss you! Until we meet again.

Please accept my condolences during this time of loss. My husband and I got to know him over the years when he was serving as the parish priest at Holy Trinity, which is where we attended school and church as children and where our parents still worship. Fr Pete was an extraordinary support to my husband and I, including visits to the hospital when my husband faced health crises before our marriage and then later when Fr Pete officiated our wedding in June 2020. Fr Pete was truly doing God’s work, and we appreciated and admired him dearly. We will miss is candor and humor. I tell ya what…. Heaven gained a wonderful soul.

Craig & Karen Gaffney Oct 18, 2021

We first met Father Pete when he began his priestly vocation at Christ the King in KCK. He assisted in guiding us through the annulment process and ultimately Blessed our Marriage in the little rock church at Holy Trinity in Lenexa. While we lived in Lenexa, he was so gracious to celebrate Mass at our home for Karen's parents 50th Wedding Anniversary. We enjoyed some great social times with Father Pete, celebrating the 1985 Royals World Series Game 6 win at our home and hosted him at Big 8 Basketball Tournament Games at Kemper Arena where he was of course pulling for the Wildcats and me the Jayhawks. The last sporting event we were at with him was a Sporting KC Game a few years back where we reconnected him with a couple he married at Christ the King in Topeka. It was great to reconnect with Father Pete in his time at St. Pius and going out to dinner with him. He loved to participate in the Catholic Charities Golf Tournament and I always made an attempt to get him there if his schedule permitted. As others have said Father Pete could say a short sermon and it had such a great message to all of those who heard it to enhance our faith and life skills. The last communication with Father Pete I had was via text when we had heard he was ill. HIs text was upbeat and reflected his zeal for life that he we was going to beat the disease. God wanted him more! We loved Father Pete and will miss him dearly, but we know he will be looking down from Heaven on all of us and whispering just a few words in God's ear to take care of all the many he shepherded during his 38 years of the Priesthood. God Rest Father Pete's Soul! Craig & Karen Gaffney
