John R. Stack was born in Kansas City, Kansas on May 15, 1933 at Bethany Hospital. He grew up in Johnson County with parents Raynold and Helen Stack and siblings Norma and Karin. He attended Roseland Grade School and graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in 1951. He graduated from Kansas State in 1955 with a degree in engineering.
John was a man of integrity who loved his God, family, friends, and country. He met his wife Martha at Calvary Baptist church in 1950, and they were married in Lubbock Texas in 1957. John at that time was a pilot in the air force.
John’s 40-year engineering career was with Black & Veatch, and he retired as a senior partner. He was a member of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers, and a Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers. For 29 years, John consulted with the city of San Antonio, building the Calaveras Lake Power Station. He was recognized by his alma mater K-State in 1996 for distinguished service in the field of engineering, and he served on the Board of Directors of the K-State Foundation Board.
In retirement, John continued to enjoy playing golf and traveling, as well as fishing and boating from his much-loved lake house. John’s greatest joy – love of family – spurred his interest in ancestry, researching, tracing, and writing about the family’s Swedish roots. This resulted in several published books, including a volume of poetry written by his mother Helen Stack, and subsequent writings as “screen porch musings”.
On July 12, 2021, John passed away peacefully in his sleep at age 88, knowing his savior Jesus Christ.
He is survived by Martha, his wife of 64 years, by his 2 sisters Norma Young, Karin Winn;
and by his daughter Laura Stack and son John Peter Stack (wife Jennifer) and his granddaughter Emmanuelle "Emma", as well as cousins, nieces, and nephews.
