Sep 29, 1941---Jun 01, 2021

Michael R. Novosel, Sr., 79, of Shawnee, KS, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021.  A Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 PM followed by a visitation until 8:00 PM on Sunday, June 6 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Monday, June 7, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 11311 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS. Burial at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to Bishop Ward High School or St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Mike was born September 29, 1941 in Kansas City, KS to Michael L. and Catherine (Cukor) Novosel. He attended St. John the Baptist Grade School, Bishop Ward High School, Rockhurst College, and the University of Kansas. In 1963, he married the love of his life Kathy Mantel, instantly gaining five siblings and in-laws he loved. Growing up as an only child, assuming the title of older brother was a role he carried out with pride throughout his life.  He worked for Gas Service Company for many years, retiring in 2001. During that time, he was involved in many civic organizations and mentored many people. In his retirement, Mike volunteered at Catholic Charities, Olathe Medical Center, and was a member of the Serra Club. Mike is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathy (Mantel) Novosel, their three children; son Mike (Liz) Novosel and their children Kathleen (Sam) Osbern, Kelly and Drew Novosel, son Chris (Amie) Novosel and their children, Nicholas, Hallie and Emma, daughter Ann (Craig) Elbert and their children Hank, Claire, Mitch and Pete, and one great grandson Will Osbern.

Mike lived life with a lot of joy.  He treasured his faith, his weekly adoration hour and attending daily Mass. He cherished his wife and loved spending time with family.  He looked forward to big family meals, holidays, family vacations, golf trips with the brothers, and attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.  Over the years, he coached many CYO football teams, 3&2 baseball teams and is still adored by many former players.  Mike’s humor and hospitality were endearing to all those who knew him.  He was an amazing husband, father and grandfather – always generous with his time and affection.  He loved life, and he will be dearly missed.

The family wishes to thank Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care for the loving care they provided to Mike as well as his family.

I don't know if Mike did this with others but he called me Son almost as often as he used my name. What a great, loving and Christian example he was.

To the Novosel Family, It is with such sadness that I send a note in remembrance of a great man!! Mr Nov was so special and was so good to me. He is one of a handful of people that I can say truly helped mold what I am today as a father, husband and person. To know him was to laugh with him. To Mrs Novy - Mom - my heart is broken but I am comforted by the fact that he is at peace. You are in my prayers and thank you for what you did for him all these years Mike, Chris and Ann - and of course your special spouses - you all had that special connection with your Dad. He was someone you called and shared everything with that happened in your life. What makes this hard is this is the first thing in your life that has happened that you can't pick up the phone and share with your Dad. But from the sorrow will come great memories and peace and celebration of a great man who lived life to its fullest and loved you all very much!! May God Bless Michael Robert Novosel Sr. always and may God Bless the Novosel Family. Love Always, Bas
