Jul 12, 1938---May 25, 2021

Dorothy Mai “Dot” Wingerd, 82, of Overland Park, was called home on May 25, 2021.  Dorothy Mai was born on July 12, 1938, in Glen Allen, Mississippi to Hector Arthur and Margaret Grace Bowe.  Dorothy Mai “Dot” grew up on Marathon Plantation in the Mississippi Delta.  She graduated from Southern Methodist University as a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority with a degree in elementary education.  After college, as a fifth-grade teacher in Memphis, Tennessee, she met the love of her life, Kenneth Gordon Wingerd.  Gordon and Dot were married for 46 years and they had four children.  While raising their children in Overland Park, Dot taught preschool and worked as a director at several area children’s programs.  After the kids were raised and out of the house, Gordon and Dot enjoyed travelling and they spent several winters at beachside destinations.   Dot was a devoted Christian and always put others above herself.  She was a caring wife, mom, grandma, mema, sister, and friend.  She was many things to many people.  She truly loved her family and friends, and she was a blessing to all who knew her.

Dot is proceeded in death by her husband Gordon; and her sister Peggy.  She is survived by her four children: Bruce Wingerd, Meg (John) Boggs, Bowe (Penny) Wingerd, and Ann (Kyle) Burton, twelve grandchildren (Chris, Nicole, Sara, Kenny, Kady, Ian, Nathaniel, Clair, William, Jaime, Daniel, and Mary Grace), 14 great grandchildren, sister Ann (Bill) Burnett of Williamsburg, Virginia, brother-in-law Bruce (Jackie) Wingerd of Clay Center, Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation is at 10:00 am and the funeral is at 11:00 am on Tuesday June 1 at Overland Park Baptist Temple.  Graveside service is at 1:00 pm at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.  Memorial donations may be made to the Overland Park Baptist Temple.

Bruce, Meg, Bowe and Ann, So sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. Shari mentioned to me that it was not expected, and kind of a shock to each of you. It’s been a long time since our days in youth group and even my one year in choir. Praying that each you are handling it well. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen all of you. Seems like Shari has me in touch with Ann and Kyle more than Bruce and Meg. I don’t even remember our last high school reunion, Bruce. As a grandparent myself, I know how much she meant to each of you and I pray that you receive comfort and peace in knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt in where she is at this point in time. Her faith was spread to many! Love to all of you. Ron France

I met Dot about 25 years ago when her husband Gordon was a Denny's regular. She quickly became one of my favorite people. Her smile, humor, and ability to embrace friends of all ages will be sorely missed by many. I like to imagine Gordon waiting for her with open arms. My thoughts are with her entire family.

Meg, Bruce, Bo and Ann, I am so sorry to hear about your mother’s passing. What a lovely lady! I have such fond memories of her growing up. She was so sweet, kind, caring, giving and loving. She was also my two youngest children’s preschool teacher, so good with the kids. She always had a smile and hug for them. Even though I had not seen your mother in years, I will never forget her love for life and those around her. My thoughts are with you! Amy Ogilvie (Sweatt)

To Dot's family, We were saddened to read of Dot's passing in the Overland Park Christian Church's Scene newsletter. We were members of the church from 1994 to 2004 and our son Andrew was six years old when we joined the church. So, he was one of the many recipients of Dot's love and nurturing in the Christian faith. We are so happy that she was part of his young life. May God be with all of you, bless you, and give you peace and comfort in the days ahead.
