Nov 28, 1979---Apr 17, 2021

Adam John Toren of Shawnee, Kansas, lost his long battle with cancer on April 17, 2021.  He was 41 years old.  Adam was born in Hinsdale, Illinois on November 28, 1979, to John and Susan Toren.  His childhood was spent going to church, playing games with his brothers, and playing the role of catcher and homerun hitter for his softball team.  The church played a large role in his life as both a participant and a volunteer, at all levels of childhood and youth ministry.  Adam’s love of children drove him to graduate with an Elementary Education degree from Emporia State University.  He spent a number of years teaching in the church’s preschool while also teaching Sunday School, and eventually working towards a degree in ministry.  During this time, he also worked as an administrator at Community Covenant Church in Lenexa, Kansas.

Adam will be remembered by the children he taught for his big heart, his passion to see them learn and grow, and his ability to make the learning process fun.  He will be remembered by his colleagues for his work ethic, his surprise lunches, and his warmth.  He will be remembered by all who met him for his unlimited generosity, his big heart, and as an idealist, who always strove to make and see a better world.

Adam is survived by his parents, John and Susan, his brothers and sister-in-law Scott and Laura Toren, Matthew Toren, and Alex Toren, and was preceded in death by his sister Beth Ann.  In lieu of flowers, Adam asked those interested to make donations to Community Covenant Church general fund or designate those gifts for the ministry with which they most strongly associate him. Gifts may also be made to Kansas City Hospice House.

A celebration of life service will be held at Community Covenant Church, 15700 W 87th Street Parkway, Lenexa, KS on May 15, 2021 at 10 am followed by a light lunch reception.

Until we meet again in Heaven Adam. You leave a void that had been filled with your teaching, your gentle personality, your Christian care for others as well as the time, effort and expertise you put into the multiple areas in which you volunteered or worked at church. RIP friend.

Dear Adam, I never had a chance to meet you, however, I was inspired by you strong faith and attitude, when battling this disease. I, myself fought against it. For two years I have prayed for you and I am still doing. I know that you are in peace under the Lord's wings. You are a beacon to all of us that shined and continue to shine the living words of God in our hearts. Until we meet, enjoy the house that was prepared for you by our Lord. To your family, may God bless you all, "May the Lord show his mercy upon you; May the light of his presence be your guide: May He guard you and uphold you; May his spirit be ever by your side."

When we moved to the area, displacing my daughter from the only church family she ever knew, Adam was her Sunday School teacher. Immediately, Matti did not want to ever miss Sunday School. Her learning, growing and desire to know Jesus continued to grow and I know Marvin and I were always so grateful for that. Adam made a big difference in the spiritual growth of my daughter, and she speaks of it even now. We are grateful for who Adam is- so grateful for his life of service. Just really, can’t say enough about what he has meant to our whole church family.

Dear Sue and John and Family, We are so very sorry to learn of Adam's passing. We learned this tragic news through the Calvin Youth Group network and we are stunned and saddened. We recall so many pleasant times with Adam and your family on Bell Tavern Court, and wonderful times together in carpools to Calvin Youth Group or heading off to Lyndon Softball park for games. Adam was always a pleasant , kind and respectful boy . His priority was family and church and we are not surprised that he continued that path with his career in serving the Lord through church ministry. We send our heartfelt condolences to you all. May God grant you peace, comfort and grace in abundance during these days. Love Gerry and Kristine Larson

John and Sue, My heartfelt sympathies to the both of you and the entire family. Karen Durst reached out to let us know of Adam's passing. I remember the fun we all had on Spring Hollow Road/Court and remember Adam as an "always smiling and laughing" young man during my babysitting days. It sounds like he grew into quite a man of faith, leading many others into their own walk. "Well done my good and faithful servant" must surely have been uttered on his arrival home. I will be keeping you all in prayer as you say goodbye and celebrate his life.

Adam was such an inspirational young man - before cancer but even more so, during his long battle. I loved all the opportunities for time with him, discussing education, sharing beliefs, and working with the youth of our church. Taryn and I loved doing RFKC welcome with Adam. He always had an answer to any question and shared himself in so many ways. We will keep all of you in our hearts as you navigate this celebration of his life. I will be out of town but will be watching online. I can only imagine the welcome he received from our Lord. Hugs and prayers to all of you. Sharon Heath

Dear John and Sue and family, May the Grace of God sustain you as you “walk through the valley of the shadow of death “ may His rod and staff comfort you. Knowing that He prepares a banquet table before you, that he is already eating at. There will be a day when you will see Adam and Beth, and others who have gone to the Lord before you. Today as you have the celebration of Adam’s life may Holy Spirit fill you with abounding love in the midst of sorrow. Our prayers are with you. With much love.
