Margaret Mary Fay , Age: 101
May 12, 1917 -- July 10, 2018

Born and raised in Kansas City, KS, this is where Margaret has always called home. She was the middle of three children, with an older sister, Florence, and a younger brother, Charles, or Francis as she always called him. Her love of taking care of others started as a doting big sister, taking Francis to and from the movies and caring for him like he was her own. She was also a loving caregiver for her mother Mabel for 13 years and for her beloved Aunt Mary for nearly 10 years.

She has been a part of the Ward High School community since literally the very beginning. Margaret attended Ward the first year it opened in 1931. Even then, she had an outstanding love for English; she was a writer and editor for The Outburst, the school newspaper, and entered creative writing contests. She continued her studies at St. Mary College in Leavenworth where she majored in English with minors in history and physical education.

She returned to Ward to teach English and physical education. She had brief stents in Wheaton, KS and at Hayden High School, but ultimately, Ward was Margaret’s home. During her career at Ward, she had such a profound impact. In her time as the English Department Head, the program saw so much growth that was driven by her drive to make the institution the best it could be. She continued this drive for excellence until she retired in 1982.

Margaret had an outstanding way of sensing people’s full potential, and inspiring them to be even better than they thought they could be. This is what made her such a fantastic educator who was admired and respected by students and colleagues alike.

St. Mary College is another place that has always been near and dear to Margaret’s heart. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree there as well as her Master’s degree . You cannot imagine how ecstatic she was when her great niece chose to pursue her education there as well. She would brag to everyone she knew because she could not contain her pride!

After Margaret retired, she spent significant time traveling with friends and family. She lived across from St. Peter’s Cathedral and was very active in the parish. Her faith was truly the cornerstone of her life.

She later moved to a retirement community in Leawood, KS. One thing was for sure, Margaret had a way of making friends everywhere she went. She would walk up to new faces and introduce herself without fear. It was the kind of confidence we all dream we could have.

Margaret was quite the fashionista! She always prided herself on coordinating her accessories with her outfit. Her collection of broaches and clip on earrings were extensive; she had the perfect ones for every occasion.

If there was one thing you can count on Margaret to be, it is a rule follower. After her hip replacement surgery, she was a doctor’s dream patient: following every post operative instruction to a T. Perhaps, this is why she was blessed with 101 great years.

Although she did not have any children, she has always loved her nieces and great nieces & nephews as her own. Her friendships were many. Some lasted lifetimes. Many of these friendships continued on with the offspring of those she loved and sustained her until she herself was called home.

The worst part about living to be 101 years old, is that you essentially out live all of your friends. There is nothing more sweet than that reunion Margaret must have had when she entered the beautiful pearly gates: so much excitement, so much happiness, so much love.

Margaret was always a lady!

Rest in peace, dear Aunt Margee.

My sincere sympathy at the loss of Margaret. I was principal at Bishop Ward High School the year after Margaret retired from teaching there. She was such a wonderful support and mentor through my years at Ward and was remembered with great appreciation and affection by faculty and all those fortunate enough to have been taught by her. She was a beautiful soul.

One of the best teachers I had. Taught me in the 50's and, 25 years later, taught my daughter.

Miss Fay was a great teacher. I loved being in her class and all the great books we read, and I have continued enjoying to read many books. She really liked my book report on Jane Eyre. May you rest in peace.
