Michael Bruce Smith , Age: 57
May 25, 1960 -- May 19, 2018

Michael Bruce Smith passed away peacefully on May 19, 2018 at the age of 57. He was born on May 25, 1960 in Kansas City, MO to Roger E. Smith and Rayma W. (Fanning) Smith. He was baptized and raised as a member of the Broadview Christian Church, achieved the Eagle Scout award and graduated from Raytown South High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1982 and his Masters Degree in Public Administration in 1984. He worked as the Assistant Town Administrator for the town of Yarmouth, Massachusetts on Cape Cod until 1993, when he returned home to the Kansas City area. He spent the last 19 years with the City of North Kansas City, concluding his career as Assistant City Administrator. During his tenure at North Kansas City, he was project manager for the Northgate Village Redevelopment Project, served in various leadership roles centered on community and economic development, and coordinated the City’s strategic planning efforts. He represented the city as a member of the MoDOT advisory group for construction of the new Christopher Bond Bridge.

Mike married his “dear Julie” on July 1, 2005. He served in each and every role during his life with purpose and responsibility: devoted husband; loving son, brother, stepfather; dutiful public servant; loyal friend; considerate neighbor; and gracious host. He was endlessly patient, honest, humble, kind, and a natural storyteller with a subtle wit. He enjoyed hiking the Rocky Mountains, golfing and American history. He was a loyal fan of the Kansas City Royals and Missouri Tigers. Mike valued the simple pleasures in life: coffee and a newspaper with a favorite morning radio show, a good laugh, a chocolate treat at the end of a long week, a beautiful view, an afternoon sports game, and a perfectly-smoked Thanksgiving turkey.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Roger Smith. He is survived by his wife, Julie Smith; mother, Rayma Smith of Lee’s Summit, MO; brother, Jeffrey (Malinda) Smith of Overland Park, KS; stepson, Kenneth Lord of Overland Park, KS; stepdaughter, Terra (Jacob) Parten and grandson Samuel of Oklahoma City, OK.
