Mary Alice Daniels , Age: 89
April 10, 1929 -- May 02, 2018

Mary Alice Daniels, 89, Overland Park, KS, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2018. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia St. Lenexa, KS. The Funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, at St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Catholic Church, 5035 Rainbow Blvd. Westwood, KS. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.

Mary Alice was born in Kansas City, MO on April 10, 1929. She graduated from Bishop Ward High School and St. Mary College. She went on to earn a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Mary Alice was married to Carl G. Daniels, the love of her life, for over 65 years. Together they had three children, Carl G. Daniels, Jr. (Debby), Olathe, Mark R. Daniels, Prescott, AZ, and Judith Ann Botham (Cliff), Gardner.

Mary Alice’s teaching career began in Missouri at Barstow School and Notre Dame de Sion. A few years later, Carl and Mary Alice, along with their two young sons, moved to Joplin, MO where she continued teaching. There they added a daughter to the family. After spending 11 years in Joplin, the lure of home and family brought them back to Kansas City. She continued teaching Latin and mathematics, as well as German and senior English. Mary Alice developed a special relationship with many of her high school students. Some of these friendships lasted over 45 years. Mary Alice was an avid writer. After 20 years in the Shawnee Mission School District, she began writing opinion articles for the Olathe Daily News on a volunteer basis. When the Olathe Daily News was absorbed by the Kansas City Star, the paper published her submissions as a “Guest Writer.” In this new position, Mary Alice was excited to be compensated for her writing. She wrote for the paper for over 11 years. This was the most fascinating and rewarding time of her life. Mary Alice, who loved gardening and growing miniature roses, also volunteered at the Johnson County Extension Office. She was a loving, caring, wife and mother with a wry sense of humor. She loved baking, reading, learning and sharing her knowledge with others.

She is survived by her husband, three children, five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and her brother, Thad E. Nugent. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert E. Nugent, Jr. The family suggests memorial donations to Olathe Health Charitable Foundation-Hospice House.

Student at SMS want to be in her class Salida , Colorado

I visited with Mrs Daniels in my junior year at SMS ......I sat in the classroom until her class started. She inspired me enough to seek her class for my senior year. Was told she was very tough. Stern. I did not read very well and she gave me some insight. Sadly 81/82 year they started at the end of the alphabet for signing up classes and by the time they got to A her class was maxed out. Only 2 teachers in my life touched me my 2nd grade teacher and Mrs Daniels. Rest in peace.

colleague from Shawnee Mission South Olathe , Kansas

Paul and I are sorry to hear of Mary Alice's passing. She was a cherished friend and colleague. Among her accomplishments was the founding of a group called Perennials (The name was her idea.), retired teachers from SM South, who continue to meet every 3rd Wednesday for lunch. We will raise a glass to her this month. Our sympathy goes out to Carl, Thad and her family.
