Richard R. `Dick` Bender , Age: 87
July 05, 1930 -- April 05, 2018

Entering his earthly home, July 5, 1930, Richard R. "Dick" Bender entered his eternal home April 5, 2018. One of six children of Fred and Katie Bender, he was born and raised on the family farm close to WaKeeney, KS. Baseball was his favorite sport which he played up to the semi pro level. Dick enlisted in the US Army serving in the Korean War. Returning home, he came to Kansas City where he went to Mohler Barber College and started his profession lasting 62 years. He owned and operated Bender's Cherokee Barber Shop at 95th and Antioch, Overland Park, KS. He semi retired and worked part time until health finally forced him to retire at 85. Dick is survived by his wife of 62 years Alice Ann; sons Barry (Linda) and Barton (Nancy); grandchildren Stephanie, Christopher (Jessica), Matthew and Scott; great-grandchildren Trenton, Emma and Kayden; sisters Irene Dietz, Joyce (Henry) Honas, Janice Hillman; brother Vernon (Virginia) Bender, his Bender and Mai relatives and friends. Dick was preceded in death by his brother and wife, George and Geraldine Bender. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed many kinds of hunting, especially pheasant and quail with his German shorthair pointers and fished from Alaska to Florida. He and Alice Ann built their "Little piece of Heaven home beside the water " at the Lake of the Ozarks where many memories were made with family and friends and many fish were caught, cleaned and cooked for his famous Bender Fish Frys. He was a lifelong Lutheran, member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 7851 West 119th Street, Overland Park, KS where his services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 10, with Visitation from 9:30-11:00 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the church. Graveside services with Military Honor's will be at 11 AM Wednesday at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, WaKeeney, KS. A long life, well lived. Thanks be to God.
