James E. Cathey, 69, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Monday, March 19, 2018. A Rosary will be prayed at 2:00 PM with a visitation to follow until 4:00 PM Sunday March 25, at Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia Street, Lenexa, KS. Jim was born April 26, 1948, in Stillwater, OK to Raymond and Gladys (Rushmore) Cathey. A lifelong educator, Jim began his career as a teacher ultimately working in administration but never gave up his love of teaching children, especially those with special needs. Outside of his professional life, Jim was a passionate sports enthusiast. As a graduate of Oklahoma State, he cheered for the OSU Cowboys and because of his Master’s Degree from KU, he also was a Jayhawks fan, much to the dismay of his wife, a Missouri Tiger. As an avid sports fan, he amassed a large collection of sports memorabilia and enjoyed all aspects of athletics including coaching, playing, watching, reading and discussing them. Jim will be remembered as someone who didn’t know a stranger and always put others first, especially his family. He was a loving husband, supportive father and beloved grandfather (Papa). He adored his grandchildren and lit up every time he saw them.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Cooper James Cathey. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lynne M. Cathey, two sons James "J.C." (Ramie) Cathey and their children Charley Rose and Corey Lynn; Jeffrey (Sarah) Cathey and their children Hudson James and Harper Elizabeth; his twin sister Sharon Baker and brother Rick (Cindy) Leith and extended family and friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Ronald Graham and his staff as well as the ER and ICU medical professionals at Olathe Medical Center for their exemplary care of Jim during his time of need.

Former Student (GEHS) Olathe , Kansas

So sorry to learn of Mr. Cathey’s passing. I remember him always saying hello when he go down the halls of GEHS whether seeing a student or faculty. Always cheerful and wanting to help you. He always seemed to be in a good mood whenever I would see him and I always knew he loved what he did for a living. He will be missed but I am sure he will be smiling down on us from above.

Friend Gardner , Kansas

To Lynn and the boys - it was a honor to be Jim's assistant principal at Nike Middle School. We had a great time working with one another. Jim was so proud of his sons and loved to tell stories. about them. After retirement Jim had a beaming smile when he spoke of his grand children. Jim had a wonderful sense of humor which is needed in the field of education. I am sad for your loss but always know that Jim was a beloved friend and colleague.

fellow teacher and friend Lenexa , Kansas

I first met Jim over 30 years ago as a fellow science teacher at Westridge. But more importantly we shared thoughts on family, life, boys in sports, KU/OSU rivalry, and grandchildren, and I was always impressed by his positivity about all. In discussing his sons (and now his grandkids) he always thought to ask about mine, as well. The best piece of advice he ever gave me was, "to retire early and enjoy my own family". I am sure you will all miss him greatly, but rest assured he wanted nothing but love and joy for all of you!
