Josephine `Josie` Szynalski , Age: 87
March 19, 1930 -- March 06, 2018

Josephine (Josie) Szynalski, age 87, joined her true love, Antoni, and her God on March 6, 2018, peacefully.

Josie was born in Wolica, Poland on March 19, 1930 to Franciszek and Katarzyna Burda. During the tumultuous Russian invasion of Poland, Josie, all alone, was placed in a traveling orphanage of Polish refugee families and single children. The orphanage traveled around the world including India, Australia, California, seeking a place to settle, until they were welcomed in Santa Rosa, Mexico. This group of refugees later became to be known as the Poles of Santa Rosa. These refugees became Josie's lifelong friends/family.

American citizens, having learned of these children, petitioned the US government to bring them into the country. Josie was in the group that went to Chicago and entered a vocational school where she learned to sew, a talent that she utilized for the rest of her life.

She met her true love, Anthony Szynalski, married in 1955, and lived in Chicago, IL. They centered their life around their Catholic faith, buying a renovated convent across the street from the Church, as their first home. They had three children, Barbara, Helen, and Edward while in this home, utilizing the church parking lot as their own playground.

The family moved to Creston, Iowa, in 1966, and had their fourth child, JoAnn. Anthony's job change took them to Placentia, CA in 1985, where they joined the Polish parish of Pope John Paul II Catholic Church, making them feel right at home, as many of the parishioners had similar life stories.

Josie lost her love, Anthony, in 2011 exactly 7 years and 7 minutes prior to her passing, and her oldest daughter, Barbara in 2015. She is survived by Helen (Kerry) Kinkade, Overland Park, KS, Edward (Melinda) Szynalski, of Rochester, MN, and JoAnn (John) Nygard, of Carlsbad, CA. Her pride and joy include grandchildren, Cassie and Ashley Mikkelen, Jennifer (Patrick) Bussen, Jessica (James) Cummins, Mary and Katie Szynalski, Joshua and Jordan Bryant, and Jack Nygard IV, and greatgrandchildren Anderson Mikkelsen, and Daniel and Caleb Bussen.

In celebration of her life, a visitation will be held at 12:00 noon followed by a Funeral Mass held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday March 9th at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Overland Park, KS. Interment beside her true love will be at a later date at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Orange, CA.
