Richard `Dick` Wheeler Byard , Age: 81
July 26, 1936 -- February 12, 2018

Dick Byard, age 81, died on Monday, February 12, 2018, at home surrounded by his family.  He was born on July 26, 1936 in Tulsa, OK to George and Eunice (Cremin) Byard.  He attended school at St. Peter’s Cathedral and St. Agnes High School (Bishop Miege High School).  He graduated from St. Benedict’s College in Atchison where he played football and was named MVP in 1957.  He taught and coached at Hayden High School in Topeka, KS and Bishop Miege High School in Roeland Park, KS for a total of six years.  He then was employed by New York Life Insurance Company for 50 years, where he served clients with professionalism and sincere concern.  Dick was a lay minister for the Catholic Church for over 40 years at Christ the King Catholic Church in Kansas City, Kansas.  He served on Catholic school boards and many fundraisers and was always generous with his time and talent to Catholic education.  Dick coached his daughters and son in sports and touched many young lives with his knowledge and caring.  However, Dick really excelled as a father.  Family was always his number one priority and he never missed a chance to spend time with his wife, children and grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his siblings, Barney Byard, Loretta Hamilton and Bill Byard.  He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kay (Grennan) and they shared a life “just the way it was meant to be”.  Dick is survived by his daughters: Terri Davis (Micky); Kathy Byard (Jim Lemos); and Jean Busey (Steve); and son, Bart Byard (Steph); grandchildren: Zachary Busey, Allison Byard, Zoe Busey, Nathan Byard and Joseph Byard; and step-grandchildren: Jimmy, Michael and Nick Lemos.

Kay and family, I was with much sadness that I learned of Dick's passing. He was ALWAYS one of my favorite teachers (Biology at Miege) and he became a lay minister while I was at Christ the king. Dick and your children will be remembered in my prayers and Masses. God bless and hope to concelebrate on Friday.
