Dorothy Darnelle (Deaver) Johns , Age: 83
February 12, 1934 -- December 10, 2017

A wonderful mom, sister, aunt, and best friend to many, DOROTHY DARNELLE DEAVER JOHNS joined her Lord and loved ones in heaven on December 10, 2017. Born in 1934 in a farmhouse in Sabetha, Kansas, Darnelle and her sister Mary learned to dress chickens, clean house, and bake pies at a young age. A strong bond and healthy competition flourished between the girls, but Darnelle was so smart, capable, athletic, and quick that it was a challenge for Mary to keep up with her, whether they were doing the dishes or playing softball. Darnelle could accomplish anything she set her mind to, with ease.

Though she skipped a year, Darnelle still graduated as valedictorian and softball superstar from Highland Park High School and earned a full-ride scholarship to Washburn College in Topeka, where she pledged and made lifelong friends with her Delta Gamma sorority sisters there. Her husband’s career took her from Kansas to England, North Carolina, Idaho, Georgia, California, and eventually back to Kansas, and Darnelle developed close friendships and made the most of each new situation. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Idaho, became a favorite math teacher at Warner Robbins Junior High, and earned a Master’s in Education at Fort Valley State College in Georgia, all the while raising her four children.

Without a doubt, her greatest joy came from her children, family, and friends. She was absolutely devoted to them. She cheered her children on in each of their pursuits and enjoyed good times and family vacations with them most of all. Though they might live 1000 miles away, any time one of her children needed her, Darnelle was there by his or her side. She was their rock. She was tremendously proud of her eight granddaughters too, celebrating each of their accomplishments with great fanfare and delight.

In 2005 Darnelle married Thomas Howard Johns and moved to Raymore, Missouri, and then to Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kansas, with him. During and after their honeymoon, they enjoyed traveling across the country with their silver Airstream trailer in tow.

Wherever Darnelle went, she lit up the room with the sparkle in her eyes, warm hugs, adventurous spirit, giggling fits, and boundless energy. Not surprisingly, people were naturally drawn to her. She will be remembered for her pomegranate jelly (which she and Mary made by squeezing dozens of pomegranates each summer); her incomparable minced meat pies; the cards, notes, and letters she sent; and the enduring love she shared.

Darnelle is survived by her husband Tom Johns; her daughter Julie Riley; her sons Jeff (Alison), Steve (Pam), and Andy Robertson; and her eight granddaughters: Chantel, Jennifer, Katy, Morgan, Kayla, Christa, Hailey and Julia. A memorial service will be held at Aberdeen Village; 17500 W. 119th Street; Olathe, KS 66061, on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at 10:30 a.m.

Memorial contribution may be made to Aberdeen Village Memorial Fund in Darnelle’s honor.
