Violet Marie Fenderson (VanTuyl) , Age: 99
February 16, 1918 -- December 16, 2017

Violet Marie Fenderson (VanTuyl), age 99, passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, at Brookdale Rosehill Senior Living. Violet was born Feb. 16, 1918 to Jesse and Dollie VanTuyl in LaCygne, Kansas. She was one of six children. Violet graduated from LaCygne High School and married her high school sweetheart, Earl Fenderson, who preceded her in death in 1976. They raised a family of 2 boys and 2 girls. Violet was a homemaker for many years and then began working at the neighborhood Dairy Queen when the children were teenagers. She really enjoyed the work and the people and didn’t retire until she was 85. She worked at 4 different DQ stores, managing and training throughout her 38 years of service, owning 1 of the stores for 2 years. She is a cancer survivor: colon surgery and chemo at age 70. Following her husband’s death, Violet and her sister, Waneta, built a duplex where they lived side-by-side for nearly 40 years. They traveled together, driving to Nova Scotia, California, and numerous Branson trips. She loved to shop for her children and grandchildren and could be found at the shopping center after work almost every evening. Violet traveled with her children and grandchildren to the Gulf Coast, Branson, and Disney World. Violet’s favorite pastime was reading and she never missed a day working the crossword puzzle in the newspaper. Violet lived on her own home until she was 97 and then moved to Brookdale following a broken hip.

She leaves two daughters; Janice Patterson (Larry) and Becky Brutto (Dean); one son, Bruce Fenderson (Susan); six grandchildren: Greg Patterson, Scott Patterson, Patricia Cantrell, Bryan Brutto, Maria Bolyard, Brooke Brutto; and eight great grandchildren. She also leaves a younger sister, Waneta VanTuyl, and brother Calvin VanTuyl. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Fenderson; her son, Steven Fenderson; 2 brothers, Melvin and Cecil VanTuyl; and one sister, Pansy Phalen. Visitation at 10:00 a.m. followed by service at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS 66215. Flowers are welcome. Condolences

Dave and Christine Hanks December 21, 2017

through Brookdale Lenexa , Kansas

Dear Family of Violet, Our sincere condolences to you all with the passing of your mother; however, we saw she was in much pain, and now she is free, and for that we rejoice with you. We feel very fortunate that Violet was Dorothy's (Dave's mom) roommate at Brookdale, and we enjoyed visiting with her and getting to know her a bit. She was such a smart lady and so pleasant to visit with. When she wasn't in obvious pain, she always had a smile! We miss her at Brookdale. Sincerely, Dave and Chris
