Kenneth H. Smalley , Age: 92
August 31, 1925 -- December 08, 2017

Kenneth was born 31 Aug 1925, Kansas City Kansas, to Horace Smalley and Ethel Ora Gibson. He was age 5 when his mother died. Kenneth's father, Horace was a shoe cobbler, taking veteran training after being gassed in WWI. Horace bought the house at 327 S. Baltimore. Concerned he might have TB, Horace moved to Harrison Arkansas with George and Lonnie Gibson. Kenneth remained in Kansas City Kansas with Grandma Ella Gibson and his Aunt and Uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Zimmerman. Kenneth served in the Navy during WWII. He was on a transport ship embattled near Bougainville in the South Pacific. As a gunner he endured the horror of helping defend the ship against a dive bomber and later against a ramming ship. Kenneth is survived by his first wife and their two daughters. Kenneth also has two grandchildren, parents to Kenneth’s five great grandchildren. Kenneth married second to Donna Hatfield, whose family he had known since high school. Kenneth’s wife, Donna, died of cancer in November 2003 and their son Michael Dale Smalley, died from heart trouble, Dec 5, 2004. Kenneth retired from General Motors after more than 30 years. Both after work and then after retirement, Kenneth restored the upholstery of late model cars. For many years he traveled to antique auto parts swap meets. He was one of the men who started the annual Model A Parts Swap Meet at Lawrence Kansas. Kenneth and Donna were members of the Democrat Club in Kansas City Kansas. Kenneth (initiated into Free Masonry in 1953) was a 33rd Degree Mason and active in Scottish Rite. Kenneth was a member at Beverly Lakes Hunting Club. He razed the old cabin and build his own. Club members remember his garage, and many hours restoring old cars and Cushman Scooters. Since about 2006, Kenneth lived with his daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hunsaker in Broomfield Colorado. Through 2017 he still visited the cabin and stayed by himself for a month or a few weeks while his daughter, Cheryl, visited her sister Linda Stuerke in Olathe. Kenneth died 8 Dec 2017, at his daughter's home in Broomfield Colorado. He will be buried, near family, at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City MO.
