Kevin R. Smith , Age: 58
November 04, 1959 -- December 02, 2017

Kevin R. Smith, 58, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away on December 02, 2017. He was born in Kansas City, Kansas on November 4, 1959; the first of three sons of Judge Dean and Pat Smith. Kevin met Jodee, his wife of 29 years, in Austin, Texas. They have two daughters, Adelle and Jacqueline.

He was a graduate of Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas and received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Kansas State University in 1984. Kevin was member of the AIA and was employed as a project architect at HTK Architects. He had previously worked in Austin, TX and Winston-Salem, NC.

Kevin is also survived by brothers Scott (Rachel) of Wichita, KS and Brian (Lori) of Laramie, WY; nieces and nephews, many cousins, and his beloved dog Mikey.

Services will be held Friday December 8th at Trinity Community Church, 5010 Parallel Pkwy, Kansas City, Kansas. Visitation will begin at 10 am, with services to follow at 11 am.

Kevin was an extremely talented architect who could take a complex set of problems and design a simple elegant solution. He was a very accepting and open-hearted man. His favorite places were the Flint Hills of Kansas, the Canyonlands of Utah, and the Basin Creek area of North Carolina. He appreciated a simple tent, a walk in the woods, a fine scotch, jazz and blues, and his loving family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve (2480 B KS Hwy 177, Strong City, KS 66869) or the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (donate.appalachiantrail.org).

“Parting is such sorrow...” — sweet because Kevin blessed all he touched and leaves fond memories of a well-lived life, and sorrow because he no longer walks among us to brighten our lives.

I will always remember the way Kevin told stories that made us laugh. Being in his company made life seem brighter, and his bright spirit will always be with us, even though we will miss him greatly. It was an honor to know him.

I count myself lucky to have been able to spend some good times with Kevin. He had a way of immediately making you feel at ease, no matter the situation. His humor was infectious and got me through some tough times. He had such a great perspective on the relative importance of things in life. He taught me the value of the phrase "it's important, but it's not THAT important". He new that richness came from the friendships you gain in life, and not the material things. Rest in eternal peace, Kevin. I'll see you on the other side.

Kevin was a good friend in college. We had many good times together and many laughs. We got together many times for lunch to 'catch up' and what I remember is how important his wife and kids were to him. I will miss him!!!

Jodee - so sorry to hear of Kevin's passing. I went to Wyandotte with him and have many fond memories. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. ~ 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Family Friend Morrison , Colorado

My heart is saddened by the passing of Kevin and I send my sincere condolences and thoughts to the entire Smith family during this very difficult time. My memories of Kevin are as a very sweet and gentle "older brother" who treated me, the youngest girl in the neighborhood, with nothing but kindness. My favorite memories are of him flinging me sky high from the "blimp" or off an inner tube at Grand Lake. Those memories always bring a smile to my heart. May your memories of him remain as beautiful in your hearts.
