Dr. Sulit, son of Ireneo Sulit and Leonor Perania, was born January 7, 1933, in Iloilo City, Philippines. He received his Associate of Arts from Central Philippine University in 1952 with honors. He attended College of Medicine at the University of the Philippines and received his Doctor of Medicine in 1957. He did a first year rotation in Internal Medicine at St. Joseph Hospital in 1957 followed by a year of Pathology at St. Joseph in 1958. He then completed an Internal Medicine residency at Truman Medical Center from 1959-1962. He went on to complete a Pulmonary Fellowship at Kansas University Medical Center from 1963-1964. After graduation, he went back to the Philippines to practice from 1964-67. He came back to Kansas City and eventually became Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy and Pulmonary Medicine Department at St. Mary’s Hospital. He also served as a Docent instructor for the University of Missouri-Kansas City from 1972-1990. He eventually transitioned to the VA medical center primary care program in Leavenworth, KS.
He was one of the founders of the Filipino Association of Greater Kansas City (FAGKC) in 1971. Examples of his tremendous list of accomplishments includes establishing the circulating publication “Tambuli”, which is still in circulation today. He started the September Affair, which is still the major annual gala for the FAGKC. He served as president of the FAGKC twice. He has contributed financially and has volunteered in multiple areas for the association. He was truly a pioneer into building what the FAGKC is today. For his contributions, the “Sulit Hall” was dedicated on his behalf in May 2016 in the Filipino Cultural Center. Arnulfo is survived by his wife, Shirley Sulit, and four sons, Andrew (Aileen) of Phoenix, AZ, Daniel of the home, Christian “Arnie” (Angela) of Katy, TX, and Loreto (Aimee) of Mesa, AZ.
