John William Casson, Jr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 15, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, KS. The Visitation will precede the service from 4-6:00 PM. Graveside service will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 22, at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Geuda Springs, KS. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be sent to City Harbor Church, Pastor Ben Malmin, 820 Wellington Street, Baltimore, MY 21211. John Casson was born in Junction City, Kansas on February 4, 1925 to John and Marion Casson. He married Trevah McCutcheon on August 21, 1945 at the end of World War II. He served in the Merchant Marines and received Lieutenant status from 1943-1945. John worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in Kansas City, Kansas as a fireman and then as an engineer until his retirement years. Prior to this he worked at the Acme Dairy and Standard Oil Company in Junction City, Kansas. John was an active member of the Masonic Lodge in Kansas City and in Oxford, Kansas. He was the Worshipful Master in 1998. John was also active as a Boy Scout Leader for 13 years for the Boy Scouts of America and a member for a number of years in the Sunflower Good Sam Camping Club as well. He was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Kansas City, Oxford, and Basehor, Kansas during his lifetime. In all of his activities and involvements, John was most known for his joy, his smile, and his laughter. He loved to tease people "just a little bit" to help make their day a little brighter. He enjoyed square dancing with his wife in his younger years. He also loved to travel and to camp, whether in a tent or in a motor-home. In his later years, he maintained his good health by walking every day but Sunday. Neighbors and friends became accustomed to his familiar walking paths through the neighborhoods both in Oxford and in Basehor, Kansas and enjoyed his friendliness along the way. Most importantly, John was a devoted and loving husband and father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved his family and his family loved him. His in-law children loved him as much as his own children did. John was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Trevah Glenda Casson and great grandson William Casson. He is survived by his son Melvin O. (Joan) Casson of Kansas City, Kansas, his daughter Glenda J. (Ken) Malmin of Portland, Oregon, six grandchildren; Curtis (Erin) Siegrist of Tyler, Texas, Mel Casson, II, Bridget (Ken) Swearingin, and Amanda ( Marc) McEachron each from Kansas City, Kansas, Benjamin (Rebecca) Malmin of Baltimore, Maryland, and Angela (Jason) Prosser of Phnom Penh, Cambodia., he is also survived by ten great-grandchildren, Branden and Gunner Siegrist of Tyler, Texas, Margaret Swearingen, Mackenzie and Blake McEachron each from Kansas City, Kansas, Charlotte and Gideon Malmin each from Baltimore, and Caleb, Justus, and Emma Prosser each from Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
