Aug 10, 1938---Apr 26, 2021

Duane Shuck of Lenexa, Kansas passed away peacefully on Monday, April 26th, 2021, after recently being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 82.

Duane was born on August 10, 1938 in Elm Creek, Nebraska to Marcella G and Earl A Shuck.  He lived in a rural community and recalled riding a horse to school with his sister Elsie. Duane became an Eagle Scout as a young man and was extremely proud to later have two grandsons who also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

In January of 1961, he married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Knutson. They lived together, inseparable for over 60 years.

Duane graduated from South Dakota State University in December 1962.  He began working for the federal government in January of 1963 and traveled throughout his career, settling in Lenexa in 1971.  Duane retired in June of 1991 after 28 years.

He was a good father who always took the time to teach and guide his sons while tinkering; some even said his sons should have been born with a hammer in their hand.  He was a loving grandfather, great-grand father, and a man who always thought about others before himself.  Duane was a strong, proud man and his kindness and patience was an example to us all.

Duane loved traveling with Pat.  He loved the lake and spending time with friends and family.  He loved to spend time with his sons and was always up for a ride in the corvette with the grandchildren on a sunny afternoon.  He was a strong patriarch of his family, and a good friend to all.  Duane never met a “stranger” or a dessert he did not like.

He is loved and will be missed by many!

He is preceded in death by parents, Earl and Marcella Shuck and his sister Elsie Cafferty.  Duane is survived by his loving wife, Patricia of Lenexa; children, Todd (Barb) of Lenexa, Mike (Pam) of Shawnee and Jeff (Anna) of Overland Park, 5 Grandchildren, Kelly, Ashley, Tyler, Chase and Keely, and 2 Great Grandchildren, Luke and Zoey, his best friend John Balaun and a host of nieces, nephews and other beloved friends and relatives.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 8th at Lenexa Baptist Church. Visitation will be 9-10 a.m., service immediately following. Burial will be at the Lenexa Cemetery.

Pat, Jeff, and family, I am so sorry to hear of Duane’s cancer diagnosis, and of his passing. I remember first meeting you, Pat, when you worked at at Court Services with Gary. You always greeted me with the warmest smile, and we would chit chat, and then here would come Gary. He would always comment on how neither he nor the office could survive without you, your skill, and kindness. You were the best!! I soon met Duane at different events related to Court Services. It was always a fun, friendly conversation with the two of you! In 1986, Jeff arrived on the scene at our house to landscape, then do he started doing remodeling, and repair work. Soon, after Duane “retired”, all of our projects involved Duane and Jeff, and sometimes Mike! We enjoyed our fun conversations with Duane, and his skill to do any project or repair was always perfection! This continued until around 2004. I’m so glad we got to know Duane, enjoying his conversations, humor, and incredible skill in remodeling. Jeff and Mike continued to do projects for us, with Duane having been a great role model. Thinking of all of you at this difficult time...share lots of wonderful memories! Love, Sheryl Kretchmer

I had the honor of knowing Duane thru his son Jeff. An honorable man all around with the multiple hats that he wore from husband, dad, grandfather and friend. He will be missed dearly but his memories will be carried for a lifetime in the hearts that knew him. Our continued prayers are with the family.

I will never forget how Mr. Shuck made me feel like family. Working on the bug in the garage, helping me change my oil, and our lake trips at Pamona. He always made me feel like I was family. He will forever be missed, loved, cherished and remembered for his guidance and sense of humor. Sending peaceful thoughts and love to the family, especially my best friend Jeff.

Duane was a patriot! It’s true no one was a stranger to him, he would always strike up a conversation every time we came together. He was an inspiration! And when I visited with Duane and Pat, which was at the lake house, you could always see his love for the family and friends! And most of time he seemed to have some project going on. And if you needed help he was ready with hands or advice!

I have the rare pleasure of meeting Mr. Shuck and getting to know him and enjoying his presence and his humor over the years. Men like him are few and far between he had wisdom beyond his years and he raised three good men with his wife and I learned a lot from him about perseverance integrity. Those are rare things these days I will miss him dearly and I pray for the family that God will give them comfort and this time

We enjoyed getting to know Duane and Pat through Todd and Barb and the many Chiefs game parties over the years! As you can imagine, they were quite spirited and as of late, everyone came away full of an assortment of good food and drink and lots of cheer!! He was a wonderful man and made us feel like part of the family. We will miss him and think it is only fitting that the Chiefs win the Super Bowl this next year to bring a big smile to Duane in heaven as he lets out a cheer - CHIEFFFSSSS!!

We are so sorry for your loss. Sending our prayers for healing as our hearts are aching. While I wished for just one more visit with Duane it wasn’t to be. It was never like Duane to make himself the center of the conversation and with his recent diagnosis I would have much concern. . I cherish the last conversation I had with him this fall, as he told me he had just completed raking truckloads of leaves at their lake home and was now in his corvette, wearing his MAGA hat on his way to coffee. Truly a fun loving uncle with a focus on a world of opportunities for future generations.
