Harold McGregor Grove (known professionally as Harold Mack) died January 14, 2021 at the age of 96. Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 20th, 10:00 am at St. Ann Catholic Church, Prairie Village, KS, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 and interment at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.
Harold was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Loyse, who died in 2012, and by his sister, Barbara Rizzo (Marion) of Kansas City. He is survived by his daughter, Monica Angrisano(Neal) of Lenexa, KS, grandchildren Michael, Grace, Eric, Sophia, and Chloe, and eight nieces and nephews.
Harold was born, November 6, 1924 to Harold B. and Kathryn H. Grove, in Chicago, IL. The family moved to Kansas Citywhere he attended Southwest High School, graduating in 1941. After one year at the old Kansas City Junior College, he transferred to the University of Missouri – Columbia. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity.
Harold’s education was interrupted when he served as a Naval Aviator in World War II. He remained in the Naval Reserve for 29 years, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Harold returned to MU after the war and graduated with a Bachelor of Journalism degree in 1948. The following year, he joined the news staff of KCMO Radio in Kansas City. When the station was acquired by the Meredith Publishing Company, and subsequently began television operations, Harold served as one of the station’s first anchormen. Over the next two decades, he worked in several news and sports capacities including News Director.
As a sideline, Harold also worked as the Public Address announcer for the Kansas City Chiefs in their first 15 years in Kansas City.
Harold left broadcasting in 1972 and began a second career as a Federal Government employee. He joined the General Services Administration in Kansas City serving as executive assistant to the Regional GSA Administrator. He retired in 1987 whereupon he and Loyse did some long anticipated traveling touring such stops as London, Venice, Edinburgh, Seville, and Honolulu. As an avid golfer, Harold was fortunate to have played St. Andrews, Scotland and Pebble Beach, California.
Over the years, Harold served as president of a variety of organizations including the Kansas City Press Club, the GSA Regional Employee Association, and the Overland Park 2-Man Seniors Golf League.
