Oct 19, 1916---Jan 10, 2021

Mary’s young father did not survive the 1918 pandemic, but his young daughter did and lived to be over 104 years old. She grew up, attended school, worked, raised a family and volunteered most of that time in Kansas City, KS. While attending school as a teen, her first job was working as a “carhop” at Smitty’s Drug Store on the corner of 18th Street and Washington Blvd. After graduating from Wyandotte High School in 1934, she was employed by a “fine apparel” ladies shop on the “Avenue”. She and her husband, Jack Bates, ran the family business, Jiffy Cleaners. They remained in business for over 40 years.

Volunteering was her passion, She was a member and board member of various civic, charitable and church organizations. One of her favorites was the Junior League. Mary served as treasurer and President in 1955. She was active in the Lenexa United Methodist Church up to her late 90's. Mary and Jack were married for 63 years. They had two children; Jackson (deceased) and Peggy (Bates) Gustin; three grandchildren, Lisa (Bates) Fisher, Bradley Gustin and Hannah (Gustin) Cutting; five great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Mary also leaves her many beloved extended family members.

Donations may be made in her memory to; Lenexa United Methodist Church, 9138 Caenen Lake Road, Lenexa, KS 66215 or The Salvation Army, 3637 Broadway Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64111 or your favorite charity.

There were never two kinder people than Mary and Jack Bates. My parents, Mary Margaret & John Bukaty, so enjoyed their friendship with them. They all lived in Westvale for many years and were a source of support and commaraderie to each other. I remember running errands with my mother when I was very young - we would make stops frequently at Jiffy Cleaners on N. 13th. Mary was such a sweetheart! My condolences to you, Peggy and family. Your parents were among the best!

I was so sad to hear of Mary's passing. Mary and Jack gave me (and my sister) jobs at Jiffy Cleaners which helped us pay our way through college. They both were such great people. I loved Mary for her spunk. I still remember the time she locked her keys in the car and couldn't get a hold of Jack. He had locked himself out of the house and was waiting for her to come home. We lived across the street from the cleaners and I saw her standing outside the car so I went to see if everything was okay. She had a hammer and was ready to break the window to get in so she could get home. It took a while but I convinced her to let me get my dad who eventually got her in without breaking the window. I have many great memories of those years - thanks to your parents. Much love to your family. Please know she made a difference in many people's lives, including mine. Marian Cherry

My mother, Jerry Thomas, passed away in 2016. My mother and Mary volunteered together at Shawnee Mission Medical Center for over 25 years and shared lunch once a month with a dozen or so ladies that called themselves the “Lunch Bunch”. My mother always said Mary was one of her best friends, and one of her favorite people.

I will always remember how sweet and kind Mary was. She used to volunteer when I worked at Lenexa United Methodist Church and I always felt just a simple joy when she was around. RIP sweet lady; you touched many hearts here on earth.

Mary and Jack were our neighbors for many years in Westvale. They were wonderful people. Mary was very active in Westvale. I still remember her going on her daily walks. She returned to our picnics for years after she moved away.

My very first job during high school during the early 70s was working for the Bates at Jiffy Cleaners making deliveries. I spent many Saturdays manning the 13th Street shop with Mary. I enjoyed both her company and Jack's leadership, and appreciated the job they afforded me. My condolences to the family.
