Jul 24, 1952---Jan 03, 2021

Randy Alan Hanschu, 68, of Kansas City, Kansas, died January 3, 2021.  Randy was born July 24, 1952, in Herington, Kansas, the son and youngest child of Clinton and Frances (Batt) Hanschu.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Ramona, Kansas.  He developed his hard work ethic growing up on a farm outside Ramona, Kansas.  He graduated from Centre High School, Lost Springs, Kansas where his football stance as a linebacker earned him the nickname of “Toad” by his friends and fellow athletes.  His college career included Kansas State University and Marymount College of Kansas.  Being lucky lottery number 4, Randy joined the army in 1972 and was discharged in 1978.  Randy worked in the battery industry for more than 4 decades.  His first job in the battery industry was with General Battery which became Exide Technologies with the majority of this time in the Quality Control department.  In 1988 he left Exide to go into Sales with W.R. Grace which later became Daramic Inc.  He remained with Daramic in Sales for 30 years traveling to see customers in the United States as well as going to Canada, South America and Europe.  He retired from Daramic in 2018 in order to enjoy his time as a retiree and grandpa.

Randy Hanschu married Jo (Malone) from Ford, Kansas, on October 1, 1978, at the Grand Avenue United Methodist Church, in Salina, Kansas.  They made their homes in Salina, Kansas (1978-1988), Owensboro, Kentucky (1988-2000), and Kansas City, Kansas (2000-present).  From their marriage, Randy and Jo have one daughter, Kacie Hanschu, and a granddaughter, Ryleigh Hanschu.

Randy’s mission in life seemed to be his passion for helping and offering advice to family and friends.  He was always on the go as he had a hard time sitting and relaxing.  He truly loved his family, friends, battery customers, gardening, small machine repairs, the Chiefs, and John Deere tractors.  He loved cooking, barbecuing, gardening, and tinkering in his shop.  His granddaughter, Ryleigh, was the “light of his eyes” as they shared many work projects and dance performances.

Surviving family include his wife, Jo, daughter, Kacie Hanschu, and granddaughter, Ryleigh Hanschu . Also, surviving are Randy’s sister, Sharyn and her husband, Mike Mueller; his nieces and their families Cindy and Andy Gray with her children, Bryant Beneke (Amy and Baylor) and Brittany Gonzales (Richard and Elliana); Kim Charles and her children, Meaghan and Madison Charles; and Tami and Brian Faris and their son, Graham.  Randy was preceded in death by his parents.

Randy’s celebration of life, where he will receive military rights will be Monday, January 11, 2021, at 1 pm CST at the Porter Funeral Home 8535 Monrovia St., Lenexa, Kansas 66215.  Like so many of us, Randy had the deepest concern for the coronavirus and cut all his running around for fear of getting or giving Covid.  To honor his strong feelings the family encourages you to consider attending his funeral virtually.  The service will be live streamed by Porter Funeral Home and can be viewed at www.porterfuneralhome.com.  If you find it inconvenient to watch at the service time, his service will continue to be available on Porter’s website at the end of his obituary for an indefinite period of time.  It should be uploaded within an hour of the service.   Cards and condolences may be mailed to Jo Hanschu in care of Porter Funeral Home 8535 Monrovia St., Lenexa, Kansas 66215.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions may be made to: American Heart Association, 6800 W. 93rd St. Overland Park, KS 66212 or to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 7023 Merrifield, VA 22116-7023.

Hello Jo and family. I am sorry to hear of Randy passing. As his neighbor across the road, classmate since first grade and roommate in Salina, the memories with Randy are many. Below I will share a couple. Randy and I shared a passion for scooters and motorcycles. His first scooter was a Vespa, mine a Cushman. At the beginning, we were not old enough to legally drive scooters on the street, but did anyway. Why not? Besides, it was Ramona, KS and the nearest law enforcement was miles away. Surprise! One day a Highway Patrolman pulled up in front of Ohms Cafe and we were both sent home for not having a driver’s license. It was our first conflict with the law! lol On another occasion, while in grade school, Randy invited me out to his house for his birthday. For entertainment Clinton, Randy’s Dad, saddled up Sam for us to ride. Sam was a Shetland pony and, unbeknownst to me, was very wild. (I should have received that message when Randy refused to ride first.) Clinton insisted someone ride him so I hopped on. As soon as I hit the saddle, Sam took off at top speed and would not stop. I was panicked as the barbed wire fence quickly approached at the end of the pasture. I prepared for the big jump but Sam had a different idea. He stopped with a vengeance and I flipped both over Sam’s head and the barbed wire fence! The only thing hurt was my ego. I think Randy knew that was going to happen! He and Clinton had a good laugh. The stories are endless. Value the memories. Randy will be missed. God bless you and your family.

Randy was a person that you really enjoyed being around. He was our sales representative for many years and we had a good many visits together. He was a professional in his work but more than that you knew he was your friend. I always looked forward to his visits and I knew he valued our business, but even more our friendship. Jo, Lisha and I want to extend our deepest condolences to you and your family at this time and you will be in our thoughts and prayers. The world was a better place with Randy here, but Heaven is a better place with him there.

To the Hanschu Family, I just saw Randy's name in our local newspaper today that Randy has gone to God. It hit me. I wanted to let you know that I worked with Randy in Owensboro at W. R. Grace/Daramic for few years. He was such a kind soul. He always had a smile and was friendly to all of us in the office. His personality was joyous and he always had a story to tell. This earth will not be as warm without his presence. My prayers for you all and for Randy. He loved his family. May God's face shine upon him and may he rest in peace. Peggy Hicks/Ow ensboro, KY

Our family was so sad to hear about Randy's passing. He was such a kind and generous man, always willing to lend a hand and share his vegetables. We will miss seeing him out working in the yard, the friendly waves, and the neighborly chats we enjoyed so much. We witnessed his devotion to his family. The neighborhood will not be the same without him. With deepest sympathy, Brandon, Stephanie, Owen, and Avery Roellchen

Randy was always a positive person and able to talk to just about anyone. As kids growing up on the farms which were 2 miles apart the one thing I remember is when Randy, my brother Steven Hanschu and sometimes John Hanschu got together at our farm they would play in the hay loft for some reason they always got into trouble. My dad Ted Hanschu would get on to them probably for throwing hay out of the loft or because he was afraid one of them would fall out. Randy and Steven seemed to fine something to get into when they were together since they were friends, cousins, classmates and lived so close to each other as children growing up. They are both now angles and may God bless them. Wayne and I send healing hugs to all of you.

We will miss Randy SO much. He is a wonderful person and an amazing neighbor. We love his kind heart and giving soul. We loved that he shared his vegetables and gardening advice with us. We will miss seeing him drive through the neighborhood on his golf cart or tractor. We will happily help watch out for his cats and we will be planting a special row of okra for him in our garden this year.

Jo, just received your Christmas card and brought a tear to my eye. I loved the part about the yard being torn up to build a pool. I can still see Randy today working on the yard. He did love that. Hope this finds you well. I know it must be hard without Randy and I imagine he is looking down on you,Kacie and Ryleigh. Jenny and Chris
