Harold was born August 6, 1928 in Maryville, MO, the son of William Howard and Opal Lockridge Watson.  Harold worked on the family dairy farm until he joined the US Army to fight in the Korean War in 1951 and returned to the farm in 1953.  He received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Service Medal and the Army Occupation Medal (Japan).  Harold went to Northwest Missouri State University following the war on the GI bill and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.  Harold married the love of his life, Virgie Carole Twombly on August 21, 1966 in Fanning, KS.  He moved to Liberty, MO the same year and began working as a Chemist for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Kansas City, MO.  Harold worked for the FDA for 42 years and helped with many significant investigations, including the Tylenol poisoning murders of 1982.  He retired from the FDA in 2008.  Harold was a resident of Brookdale Town Village in Leawood, KS from 2009 until early 2019, and Sunrise Assisted Living in Lenexa, KS from 2019 to present.

Harold was preceded in death by his spouse Carole, his parents and a sister: Harriet Cain.  Survivors include his daughter: Anna Dozier (Jeff) of Lenexa, KS; two sons: William "Bill" Watson (Jonna) of Beaver, PA and Edward “Ed” Watson (Victoria) of Kansas City, MO; and two grandsons: Samuel and Luke Watson.

Harold was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was full of life.  He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and would share stories of them with everyone he met.  Harold loved farming, all things John Deere green, airplanes and chemistry – including teaching any unsuspecting stranger about Beer’s law.  Harold was a devout Christian who read the Bible every day.  He wore his Korean War veteran hat, in his words, “For all the veterans, especially for the ones who didn’t make it back home.”  Harold never considered anyone a stranger and loved to talk and tell stories to everyone he encountered.

Harold was a great friend and I know he loved his family very much. The most important thing about him was he was a man of God and believe in Jesus Christ. He did much to help me in my spiritual walk. My condolences to his family and friends.

Harold was the best of the best. We spent many hours talking(I mostly listening). Harold and old pal Calvin are the type of people we need more. When Harold showed me his picture in Army uniform and mustache, I told him he looked like a British wing commander.

I was unable to personally get to meet Harold while he was still with us. I was, however, blessed to have been brought into his son, Ed's life. I have heard, through Papa Ed, what a wonderful person Harold was. I know, through God's love, I will have the pleasure of meeting him in heaven.

friend, co-worker, supervisor ,Independence ,Missouri

Harold was a great friend and colleague. We worked together for many years as he trained me in elemental analysis work, then I became his supervisor for several years. A strong Christian man! He wove the Lord into his conversations, and you just knew if you caught him at lunch or on a break he'd be reading the Bible. Oh yeah, did he love Johnny poppers! I gave him a diecast John Deere for his birthday many years ago. Harold cracked me up talking about 383's with 440 heads (car nuts like us will understand) and a '69 Pontiac that could do 170 mph. I was never able to convince him it might take a bit more horsepower than a '69 Pontiac could generate to do that. I feel like I almost know Ed, Anna, and Bill personally because Harold talked so much about them. They were truly his first loves along with Carole I know Harold is now with Carole and his Lord and Savior, and I'm glad I got to spend time with him.

To the family and friends of Mr. Watson always cherish the fond memories of time spent together and although you may grieve the Bible can be a source of comfort. At (Revelation 21:3,4) it speaks of a time when there will be no more sickness or death, also at (Acts 24:15) it speaks of a resurrection that we all can look forward to. May the peace and love of the God of all comfort be with you all. Comfort can be found in our Creator through prayer and through his word the Bible and in Jesus Christ.

We had many discussions about Doniphan county and Fanning. Such a sweetheart.

Harold was such a sweet and genuine man. When I started working in the lab at FDA, he was assigned to train me on the analysis of Total Diet Study samples for nutritional and toxic elements. I was a young lady at the time, and he jumped right in like a grandfather and eagerly taught me whatever he could. He was always quick with a joke and a smile. To say the least, he was well loved among his peers, and will be sorely missed.

Harold shares my fathers name. I admire him as a veteran, co-worker, and fellow Christian. He was a man of wisdom and I listened intently to his words when he spoke. It fills my heart to know he had eternity taken care of long in advance of his passing and he was able to grow others faith by sharing his.
