Sharon Kay Cox, 82, of Lake Quivira, KS passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. She was born on August 9, 1938 to Edwin “Babe” Miller Jr. and Laura “Esther” Miller in Macon, MO.
Sharon attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School, Macon, MO. During this time, her faith in Catholicism grew and became a central part of her life. After she moved to Kansas City, she became a proud parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Shawnee, KS.
She attended Macon High School, Macon, MO where she played basketball for the Macon Tigerettes. Her senior year the team went 30 – 2 which earned them the nickname of “The Golden Girls”. The friendships she formed during her high school years became lifelong.
Sharon attended University of St. Mary, Leavenworth, KS where she received a Degree in Business.
After graduating Sharon moved to Kansas City, MO and worked at Commerce Bank for almost 20 years. In January 1975 she married John H. Cox and changed careers to work with her husband at his company, Robinson’s Shoes. Sharon and John not only worked together at Robinson’s, they revived a 100-acre campground and farm in Bonner Springs, KS known as Cutty’s Campground. Here Sharon found her love of the outdoors and enjoyed every spring, summer and autumn welcoming a new bounty of campers, some of which became friends for life. Her love for peacocks developed during this time and she enjoyed raising her own peacocks and collecting their feathers in the fall.
Later Sharon and John moved to Lake Quivira, KS and eventually retired. Thus, began a new relaxing but busy lifestyle. She enjoyed playing golf, playing bridge with her friends, outings on their pontoon boat, wintering in Florida and traveling abroad.
Sharon was preceded in death by her father and mother; brother, Donald Paul Miller; stepson, John Hughes Cox, and daughter Deborah “Debbie” Gray.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years; daughters, Sheila (Charles) Harmon and Jacqueline “Jackie” (Rick) Gray; step daughters, Carolyn Gorman and Nancy (Louis) Zarr; brother Robert “Jerry” (Lorraine) Miller; sister in law, Danette “Aunt Danny” Miller; grandchildren, Rachel (Toby) Stevenson, Clinton “CJ” Lamberd, David (Jesus) Cooper, Samantha “Sam” Mika Levine and Katherine “Katie” Gray; step grandchildren, Christopher Gorman, Jennifer (Lary) Burke, John Zarr and Arielle (Brian) Jackson; great grandchildren, Tristin Estep, Kody Stevenson, Blake Stevenson and Layla Stevenson and step great grandchildren, Justyn Gorman, Christopher Gorman, Noah Burke, Phoebe Burke and Nina Burke.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Huntington’s Disease Society of America or American Cancer Society.
