Irene Dixon, 87, of Palm Springs, CA passed away Friday, May 15, 2020 at home.  A visitation will be from 9:00-10:30 AM followed by a Memorial Service at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 24, 2020 at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia Street, Lenexa, KS 66215.  Due to Covid-19, MASKS ARE REQUIRED.  Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, KS.   Memorial contributions may be made to Unity Temple on the Plaza.

Irene was born on November 10, 1932 in Kansas City KS to Hobart and Evelyn (Lynn) Murray and lived most of her life there until relocating to California to be near her sons in 2016.  After high school, Irene married the love of her life, Bill, and briefly moved to Tucson, AZ while he was stationed in the service.  She was a long-time Executive secretary for Business Men’s Assurance Company where she worked with colleagues she considered her “BMA family”.  Irene was a 1950 graduate of Wyandotte High School and was a charter member of Victory Hills Baptist Church in Kansas City, KS where she was pianist for over 42 years.  She was an active member of Sherman Chapter, No. 8, Order of the Eastern Star for 60+ years, where she held the office of Worthy Matron (twice) and later Grand Organist for the State of Kansas.

Irene was a current member of Unity Temple on the Plaza. Irene’s passions included cooking, playing the piano, the masonic lodge, camping, playing cards, crocheting, and spending time with family and her many friends.  Her Kard Klub and Brunch Bunch groups of ladies held a special place in her heart.  Irene’s smile and laugh were infectious, and she was always able to find joy in any situation.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) L. Dixon, Jr. and her parents Hobart and Evelyn Murray.  Survivors include 2 sons:  David Dixon (Jesus Hernandez) and Dean Dixon (Duane Aldridge) and her loyal companion Hello Kitty, all of Palm Springs, California.

Irene was a very special person in my life. I will always cherish the memories of family dinners at her house, holidays, vacations, and lots of Shanghai Rummy games with her! I am heartbroken for myself and also for her boys. The last several years I have been so touched by the love shown to her by Dean and his amazing husband Duane as they took such wonderful care of her in their home. We will all carry with us forever the absolute joy she found in life, even in difficult times. Rest peacefully sweet mama Irene. Much love goes with you.

My heart goes out to you, David and Dean. I loved your mother so much! What a great time we always had together! It was a great time in heaven for her on May 15th when she was finally in the arms of your dad again! I’m sure your parents and mine sat around the table first thing playing cards! Your mom is at peace and God certainty welcomed her with open arms! Love to you both!

Irene was a friend to everyone she met. I was lucky enough to meet her at Victory Hills Baptist Church and worked at BMA Tower where I saw her frequently. She was so very talented and we appreciated her piano skills at church. May God bless her boys and her family with comfort. Heaven got another angel.

Dear David and Dean, we were so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. The picture in the obituary is SO Her. Fond memories of your mom and dad. We treasure the pictures your dad took of the neighborhood kids: the Dixons, McCullys, Karls, Callaghans. We are now the "grandparents" of the neighborhood. NO one has been here longer than us. May your mom's memory be great comfort to you both. Pat Callaghan
