Bernard G. Hollenbeck Sr. passed away on March 12, 2020 at the age of 97. He was born January 21, 1923 in Kansas City, Kansas and lived his entire life in the Kansas City area. Bernie was a graduate of Wyandotte High School in the class of 1941. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 19, went through pilot training and then served in the war in the Pacific, participating in many campaigns, including the Philippines and the battle of Iwo Jima. Prior to going to the Pacific, he married Anna Marie Gaster, his childhood sweetheart, in August of 1943. After returning home from World War II, he went to work for the Rock Island Railroad as a railroad car repairman and continued in that job until his retirement in 1982. In 1954, he joined the Naval Reserves serving one weekend a month and two weeks each year as a pilot at the Olathe Naval Air Station. Bernie was an avid fisherman and took the family on numerous fishing trips to the Ozarks, Minnesota and various lakes in the Kansas City area. He was also very active as a golfer and was president of a senior league playing at Dubs Dread Golf Club. He is survived by his wife Anna Marie, two sons; Bernard Jr. and Bruce, two grandsons; Jeff and Kevin, and two great grandchildren; Christian and Madelyn.
Private family services will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, Kansas.
