Clara L. Gates Sullivan, 94, Kansas City, KS, died Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Providence Medical Center. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. with the Funeral Service to follow at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 15 at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, KS. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Mary-St. Anthony Church in Kansas City, KS or Harvesters Community Food Network in Kansas City, MO.
Clara was born March 7, 1925, on Strawberry Hill in Kansas City, KS, the daughter of Peter and Rose Pokaluk. After raising her four children Clara worked for the Pyramid Life Insurance Company for 10 years before retiring in 1987. She was a Catholic and attended St. Mary-St. Anthony Catholic Church. She was a lover of music and dancing, which is how she met her husband Josiah. She also loved socializing and gaming at the Argosy Casino. Clara was a student of astrology and loved to prepare horoscopes for her children, grandchildren and in-laws. She enjoyed telling her family and friends what the astrological charts indicated for them. Clara took great pride and joy in cleaning and maintaining her home and was always ready to welcome visitors. Clara was preceded in death by her husbands, Daniel T. Gates, Sr., and Josiah J. Sullivan, her son Daniel T. Gates, Jr. and a step grandson, Evan Cowan. She is survived by her sons and their wives, Dennis and Sandra Gates, Ken and Mary Jo Gates, Mark and Stacey Gates, grandchildren and their spouses, Ryan and Lisa Gates, Tyler and Hannah Gates, Michelle and Ben Clibon, Lisa and Isom YaDullah, Ian Gates and Mia Gates and her fiancé Justin Robertson, and great grandchildren, Rosalyn, Felicity, Teddy, Griffin, Omari, Milayna and Addison.
