Jun 19, 1935---Jan 16, 2020

Norman P. Gunderman, 84, of Overland Park, KS, passed away on January 16, 2020.  A memorial service will be held at 1:30pm on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia St, Lenexa, KS, with a visitation immediately following.

Norm was born June 19, 1935 in Kansas City, KS to Paul and Dorothy (Horseman) Gunderman.  He was a proud graduate of the Wyandotte High School Class of 1953, and received an associates’ degree from KCK Community College.  He was the president and owner of Electrical & Magneto Service Co. for 43 years until his retirement in 1998.

Norm was an active, longtime member of Zion Church where he served in numerous capacities including Council President.  He was an avid fan of the Royals, Chiefs and his beloved KU Jayhawks.  But his greatest love and accomplishment was his family, and for years he coached baseball, basketball and other sports, and never missed his children’s games or activities. In his later years, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  His was truly a life well lived.

Norm is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Marilyn (Fendorf) Gunderman, his brother Bill Gunderman of Kansas City, MO, his sister Marilyn Schuck of Palm Harbor, FL, son Randy (Susan) Gunderman of Overland Park, son Derron (Kelly) Gunderman of Overland Park, daughter Sheri (Todd) Gatton of Haviland, KS, grandchildren Bryan (Jill) and Brett (Ilena) Gunderman, Kayla, Caroline and Emily Gunderman, Colton and Ashton Gatton, and 8 great grandchildren whom he loved dearly and a large extended family.    In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Honor Flight Kansas City.

Marilyn & Family, please know our prayers are with you. So many miles together. Klamm Park in the early ‘40’s, 3&2 baseball. Coach Paul, The Green Jewel. He and Don Kukuk were a pair to draw to when it came to baseball. Then there was the time I told him to turn on the wrong road and we nearly drowned the Green Jewel in Welborn Lake! I’ve shared so many stories with our family but this is by far the toughest one to get through. Know you are loved dear friend. He was touched with God’s grace through you.

Dearest Marilyn and Family, My heartfelt sympathies to each and every one of you as you celebrate the life well lived by your beloved husband, father, granddad, brother, uncle, cousin, friend. Although eleven hundred miles separated my family from yours, the love in our hearts has bound us together for many years and always will. My family travelled from Virginia to KC, Kansas every opportunity we were given. It was always a joy to see each other, enjoy picnicking with our Horseman cousins, attend Zion Church, see the sights of Kansas City, and just visit over a glass of iced tea. I will always think of Kansas City as my second home although I didn’t ever live in Kansas. In 1988, your family welcomed my beloved husband, Bruce, and we began making new memories. May your family memories comfort each of you today and all your tomorrows. With love, hugs and a warm smile, Kathy and Bruce

I will be the first to admit that I am a little jealous of my good friend Dale Fendorf. How lucky he is to have Norm as an Uncle? When I think back though my jealousy was unfounded. Norm always made me feel like I too was his Nephew. Even though we've had only a few interactions, each one is oh so vivid in my memory and leaves me smiling. Norm managed to steal the show at Dale's wedding without even trying! From that day on, I aspired to emulate the cute, fun dynamic of Norm and Marylins relationship. I'm sorry I can't be at his service personally. Janette and I have the entire family in our thoughts and prayers.
