Beverly Ann Dumler, formerly of Basehor KS, died January 17, 2020. She is
survived by her daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Chad Dumler-Montplaisir, her son
and daughter-in-law David and Michelle Dumler, three adored grandchildren: Natalie
(10), Nathan (8), and Mitchell (7), a sister-in-law Leanor Layton, and many loved nieces
and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Donald H. Dumler; her
parents, Glenn and Edythe Layton and step-mother Elizabeth Layton; as well as her
three brothers, Don Layton, Robert Layton, and Glenn Layton and sister-in-law Carolyn
Layton.
Born November 18, 1936, Beverly grew up in Wellsville KS graduating from
Wellsville High School in 1954. At WHS she was Junior class president, played
trombone, was a cheerleader, and drum majorette. She married Donald Dumler of
Russell KS in 1956.
She had a wide variety of careers through the years including working in the lab
at Bethany hospital, direct sales for HODA (House of Decorative Accessories), earning
her real estate license and selling real estate, co-owning and operating Baskin Robbins
stores, nearly completing a degree in Data Processing at KCKCC, and serving as the
first Director of Community Education for the Basehor/Linwood School District. In this
role she re-energized the small homecoming parade into a robust event that drew the
community together. She also created a safe senior alternative graduation party--one of
the first in the region--among other accomplishments. She served in this position for 15
years, retiring in 1998. She was an enthusiastic community leader serving as president
of her Beta Sigma Phi chapter, co-founding the Basehor Chamber of Commerce,
serving as a First Baptist Church Youth Group leader, PTA president, a local Gardeners
of America leader, and later, President of the Resident Council at her nursing homes.
She also was a church choir member, active room mother, 4H club volunteer, member
of the Booster Club, supporter of the Basehor Historical Society and host to many
parties and events. She won a variety of recognition awards for her service to the
community including a local Spirit Award and was honored as a Basehor Homecoming
Grand Marshall.
Beverly was an avid sports fan, loudly cheering on the Kansas Jayhawks, Chiefs,
and Royals. She never missed a school play, concert, game, or program of which her
children were part. Though Beverly was recognized for her use of a scooter or
wheelchair over the last 35 years, due to her long battle with MS, she was never defined
by this condition. Her enthusiasm for her family, friends, and community, as well as her
strength to overcome obstacles and spearhead numerous programs and projects to
improve her community, were hallmarks of her life.
Beverly’s memorial will be held on Saturday, February 1st at Shawnee Church of
the Nazarene, 5539 Quivira Rd, Shawnee, KS 66216 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the
family asks friends to consider a contribution to the Beverly Dumler Memorial fund.
Beverly will be buried with her husband in the Leavenworth National Cemetery.
