May 15, 1943---Jan 20, 2020

John H. McClure, 76, passed away on January 20, 2020.  John was born on May 15, 1943 in Des Moines, Iowa.  He was a graduate of Dowling High School in Des Moines, Iowa and graduated from Creighton University in 1965.  He enlisted in the Army in April 1966 and served as Specialist Fifth Class at the Pentagon in Washington DC for two years.  He married Sally A. Gilpin on October 17, 1966.

John’s work life in the transportation industry led him from Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky and eventually to Lenexa, Kansas for 36 years.  John also had a vacation home in Naples, Florida for 29 years.

John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sally, his two adult daughters Jill Brewster (William), and Kimberly Tronoski (James); grandchildren Zachary Brewster, Morgan Brewster, Ava Tronoski, and Ethan Tronoski; brother Lawrence McClure of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, and sister Claudia Schueler of Decatur, Indiana.  John was preceded in death by his parents John H. McClure and Alice Jeanne Weichman McClure of Des Moines, Iowa; brother Thomas McClure of Tacoma, Washington.

John dearly loved his family.  John especially loved the wonderful family vacations that they all had together.  Golfing and relaxing on the beach with his family and friends was one of his greatest joys.

A private family Committal Service will be held on Friday, January 24, 2020 at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa, KS.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in John’s memory to The American Lung Association (www.lung.org).

Hugs to Kim, James, Ava and Ethan. I had the pleasure of hosting John and Sally for Thanksgiving in Kentucky along with my brother James and Kim years ago. John and Sally were so gracious--and John was so easy to talk to. Glad I could see them both again at Ava's graduation from high school. Again, John was so friendly and greeted me as an old friend. My best to all--you are all in my thoughts. Love-- Liz, Maddie, Ollie, Nate and Sam

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. In the few family gatherings we had, our memory recalls John as a true gentleman, thoughtful and kind, considerate of others and a true friend. To Sally, Kim and Jill and all the family we offer this poem we love: "When winter ends then spring begins, and flowers bloom once more as fragrant and beautiful as in the years before. Just as comfort follows grief, and hope returns again, happiness will return to you." Love To You All, Syl and Rich

Dear Sally, Jill and Kim and families. We were so taken aback by learning of the passing of John. I talked to him a few months ago and he told me about his illness. Sadly, I did not fully comprehend the gravity of the situation. I thought about him and Sally over the holidays and meant to call and check on him, but time just slipped away. I am forever sad about my failure. I played golf with John at Heritage Park Golf Course for 15 years every Saturday at the 3rd tee time of the day. One of our other golf partners, Russ Niemi, passed in late 2019. Although John and Sally and us have grown apart over the past few years, we will never forget the great times we had together and I will never forget what he gave me, great patience for a young golfer who now enjoys the game, with Carolyn, on a near daily basis in season. He will forever be remembered for all the fun we had and for that special gift, our love of golf. He will be missed.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of a good friend and classmate. We graduated from Sacred Heart Grade School in West Des Moines together in 1957 and then we graduated together from our respective high schools (Dowling & St. Joseph Academy) in 1961. I extend my sympathy and prayers to John's family and his brother Larry and sister Claudia.

Death changes everything. Time changes nothing. I will miss the sound of your voice, the wisdom of your advice, the stories of our lives and just knowing you’re here. So no, time changes nothing. I will miss you as much today as the day you died. I just miss you. Until we’re all together again know how much you are loved.

John was a friend from high school and college where Sue and I got to know him quite well. He was a true gentleman, liked by so many and a fun guy to be around. His quiet manner was impressive and his good looks remained forever. Our sympathy goes out to all of John’s family.
