Feb 16, 1950---Jan 04, 2020

Dan Moffett, 69, of Lenexa Ks. passed away Saturday, January 4, 2020. A celebration of life will be held 2:00 PM Monday, January 13, at Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, Ks. Dan was born February 16, 1950, in Kansas City Mo. He graduated from Kansas State University with a B.S. in biology in 1972. He was a member of the university rowing team and had the opportunity to row against Harvard, something he was very proud of. He owned and operated Moffett's Gym and Maxx Performance for nearly 20 years. He designed and built some of the best weightlifting equipment around; which was used by some of the Kansas City Chiefs, and several fire and police departments. After selling the gym, he went to work for Fedex, where he remained until retirement. He became an avid fisherman, flyfishing at Lake Taneycomo, and steelhead fishing in Michigan whenever he got the chance. He began tying flies, which he became an expert at. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Debra (VanBuskirk) Moffett, three children, Max Moffett,(Meg), Kelly Moffett, (Bruce Lapham), Molly Gotobed, (Brad), and 3 grandchildren, Isabell, Simon, and Owen. Dan was larger than life, he loved his gym buddies, his Fedex family, and his fishing buddies. He was always ready for a joke, and would sing, "O Little Squirrel " his own composition, even when sober. Rest in peace, Dano, you were one of a kind.

I am saddened to hear of the death of Dan. Debbie, Dan and I were good friends during our senior year at Shawnee Mission North. We did not go to the same college, but nevertheless, I always remembered the two of them and wondered what had become of them. I am glad to know that they spent a good part of their lives together; they belonged together. My thoughts and best wishes are with Debbie and their family. Friendship never dies. Love, Leslie

Dan will certainly be missed. I’m glad I got to hear his newest song “Duvet Crockett” a wonderful companion to “O Little Squirrel”. Incomparable!

My deepest sympathy to you all. I can only the imagine the profound sadness and the hole left in your family's heart. Dan left quite a mark on the people he met with that dry wit, pithy comments and building, which to this day, in my opinion is the best gym equipment around. May the memories you made with him sustain you now and in the future.

I am out of town and will miss the celebration of life. I'm shocked, saddened and sorry to hear about your loss. I saw Dan at the car wash a few months ago. We talked about the gym, it's members and the good ole days. The great memories I had from Moffett's Gym are permanently embedded in my mind. Dan was intelligent, analytical and had a unique sense of humor. The gym at my house is all equipment built by Dan. He came over with his paint gun and helped design the color scheme and placement of every piece of equipment, which I still use and so do my kids and their friends. I've trained people there and am reminded whenever I lift on other equipment how far superior his equipment is. Dan had numbers and angles scribbled down in various places in his shop. I admired how his mind worked. My kids will inherit his equipment one day and his legacy will live on. For now I'll continue using the best built equipment around designed and built by a unique, inspiring entrepreneur, Dan Moffett. Thanks for the memories.

Saddened to hear the news of Dan's passing. I've been gone from KC for decades however my time at the gym is still in the forefront of my mind. Had many good times there. Dan was always very kind, witty and just a plain good guy. I'm sorry for your heartache, and his early passing. God bless you all, Bekki

I just ran across Dan's obituary and was saddened to see Dan had passed away. I used to work out at Moffett's Gym back in the day and have great memories from that time. Best gym ever. Thanks for the memories and rest in peace.

I met Dan before he had his gym training in his garage and he had been married a year and half. I helped him open his gym and put him on Blair's Protein so he went from 217 to 232 in record time. I was living in Lenexa and had been transferred there from Atlanta. We had some great workouts and I left the area maybe a year later. I had gotten into pro wrestling and would send him letters around1981 and 1982. I returned years later weighing 40 lbs. more and much bigger and he could not believe it. He took pictures of me and showed them to members especially ones with Arnold Schwarzenegger and me. I had come to town 3 times to see him around 1983 1989 and 1992. we would go out to lunch and talk about training and his life Dan was a great guy and we shared same birthday but he was a year older. Dan rest in piece and we will hook up again Jim Shiblom

I just had the thought to Google some of the old Moffetts crew and ran across Dan's obituary. I thought I would add to the notes. Dan was awesome and the time we spend at the gym will never be forgotten. I have many many memories and cherish those! Lots of love to Dan's family.
