Sep 19, 1922---Oct 26, 2019

Beryl Louise Legler Hennigh, 97, died October 26th at the Residential Living Center in Garnett, KS. Beryl Louise was named after two of her Aunts on Sept. 19, 1922 when she was born in a house built by her father Herbert Legler on the Legler farm located at the time at 95th Street and Quivira Road.

She married Robert Holly Hennigh on March 18th, 1942. They had many adventures together as she lived in California and South Carolina with him during his years of service. They moved into the house built by her grandfather David Legler in Historical Old Town Lenexa in 1957.

She was a member of the Methodist Church, helped with coffee and donuts, was on many committees and helped by making casseroles for the Mission on Wednesdays. She faithfully attended church every Sunday unless she was “Contagious”.

Beryl served eight years (1975-83) on the Lenexa City Council and on committees for seven mayors. She was the 1976 Bicentennial chairwoman for Lenexa and one of two collaborators for the Lenexa Centennial Book of 1969 (the town was platted in 1869 and incorporated in 1907). From 1980 to 1986 she was the co-owner and editor of the Lenexa News.

She was a Charter member of the Lenexa Historical Society. The Legler Barn Museum was built in 1864 by her Great Grandfather Adam Legler. She was the Coordinator of Historical Research and programs for Legler Barn Museum: hostess for LHS general meetings, a member of the Johnson County Museum Friends group, and member of the Shawnee Mission Historical Society.

When she moved to be closer to her son, Lonie Hennigh, she became the ambassador of Lenexa, telling all that would listen stories about the old days. Everyone enjoyed her stories of the city. Her heart will always be in Lenexa.

She is survived by her son, Robert Lonie Hennigh, wife Pamela, Grandson Jason Robert Hennigh, wife Christina, Granddaughter Holly Nicole Hennigh Blanchard, husband Danny, Great Granddaughters, Micheala Ross Hennigh and Antonia Marie Hennigh, Great Grandsons Austin Ross Hennigh, Wyatt Ethan Blanchard, and Brody Cash Blanchard. Family members reside in Paola and Centerville, KS.

Graveside service 1:00 pm, Wednesday, October 30, 2019, Lenexa Cemetery. Visitation 11:30-12:30, at the Porter Funeral Home, Lenexa, KS.

Beryl’s memory will live forever in the stories and recorded information she has left for us. She is a true pioneer in the history of Lenexa and JoCo. She will be missed by all.

Beryl is a true matriarch of Lenexa. We bought our home in 1955 and Beryl was the City Clerk --at least she is the one whom we went to for services -- water meter, etc. She was involved in esablishing the Lenexa Historical Society and because her family was involved in the development of Lenexa, she is perhaps the one to whom all went with their questions! What a wealth of information she had! We will miss her not only from the city point of view but the United Methodist Church! Rest in Peace Beryl! Manfred & Dorothy Wehrly & famly

I agree with Mrs. Hennigh the old town of Lenexa was fun and friendly. I went to school in the old two story red brick school building.

I never knew Beryl personally, but hoped to one day sit and talk with her.I am constantly surrounded by her because I am the archivist and historian for the Lenexa Historical Society - an organization that couldn't have existed without her dedication, hard work, knowledge, and passion. I send my condolences and those of the LHS Board members and we hope to honor her in whatever way we can.

Beryl was such a wonderful lady! I admired her all my life. My family bought the house at 95th Terr and Pflumn her husband built. My parents lived there over 50 years! LUMC was so lucky to have her as a member. Truly a legend. Sympathy to all the family.

To this day, Beryl is one of the greatest people I ever worked with. Kind, generous, funny, sweet as can be, and totally dedicated to the heritage of Lenexa. I learned so much from her—patience, wisdom, family—and will think of her sweet smile often. My sincere condolences to her family.
