Jul 27, 1928---Jun 30, 2019

Kay A. Raab, 90, of Overland Park, KS passed away on Sunday morning June 30th, 2019.

Kay was born July 27, 1928 in Frontenac, KS. and grew up in Pleasanton, KS. She graduated from Pleasanton High School and the Ursaline Academy in Paola, KS.  Shortly thereafter, she began teaching in a one room school house commuting in her Model A touring car. She moved to the Kansas City area in 1950 and it was there she met the love of her life, Louis Raab.  The two were soon married and they set off for a life of adventure and fun.  Kay was a loving mother of five children, four boys and a girl.  In her early married life, she was the co-founder of the family business.  After the last of five children went off to school full-time Kay decided to pursue her dream for a career in teaching. She embarked on studies through the School of Education at Avila University and Rockhurst University to complete her undergraduate work. She would later earn a master’s degree in Reading from the University of Kansas in 1979.  In total, Kay’s career in teaching spanned three decades.  During that time, she was named “Girl of the Year” 1980 in Beta Sigma Phi social service sorority. A long-time member of the professional teaching sorority Kappa Kappa Iota, Kay served as Kansas State President (1986) Gamma Chapter. In 1992, she was inducted into the Who’s Who among America’s Teachers. Kay taught at Frank Rushton Elementary school for 26 years and taught a total of 30 years in KCKS District #500. She received distinction from the Kansas City Kansas School Board for her numerous years of service upon her retirement in 2003.

Kay exuded a free spirit and love for life.  Family and friends were incredibly important to her.  She was proud of her Irish heritage and reveled in the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. She spent her free time and summers with her children and grandchildren riding horses, playing tennis, appreciating the arts, dining out, enjoying Kansas City Jazz and photography – taking pictures – lots and lots of pictures.

She was preceded in death by her parents Michael and Martha Riley, her sister Shirley Ann Riley and brother Joseph Riley, her husband Louis C. Raab, son Louis M. Raab, Linda (Barket) Raab, Daughter Joan K. Raab.

She is survived by her family:

Sons: Stephen (Natalie) Raab, Mark (Patricia) Raab, Thomas Raab and Becky Gredell. Daughters-in-law Sharon Hurley-Raab, Laura Vera-Raab and Kristen Zane.

Former Student ,Kansas City ,Kansas

My triplet brothers and I attended Frank Rushton from 1965-71. I had the good fortune to have "Mrs. Raab" (how I'll always think of her) as my 4th grade teacher. I remember her class fondly. She noticed that I had trouble seeing the chalk board, leading to my first pair of glasses!! I also had a bad habit of saying "hey" to get her attention. She always told me that "hay was for horses" and to call her by name. My thoughts and prayers to all of her family. She surely rests in peace.

Friend of Sons Mark, Steve and Tommie ,Kansas City ,Missouri

Kay and Louis Raab were a standard in the old Guardian Angels neighbourhood, school and church in midtown Kansas City. All, and I mean all, of their children were really loved and respected by their classmates and neighbours. If a Raab kid was your classmate or friend, you knew that you had someone at your back. This is mostly because they were raised by Kay and Louis Raab who had rock sold mid-western Kansas City values. To be a friend of one of the Raab children was an honour. Rest in Peace Kay, job well done, life well lived. You are finally back with Lou. You are a blessing, and your children continue that heritage.

Patty McGraw Babcock Jul 10, 2019

Tom and Peg McGraw's daughter ,El Campo ,Texas

We are sorry to hear of Kay's passing. Mom knew Kay was in bad health and we planned a 90th birthday trip from Texas to Kansas City for her to visit Kay, Patty Payne and Mary Holman. We will be in KC on July 19th. Kay was so fun and friendly! Our parents had so many fun memories together! I will always remember your mom was the first person I saw with a 35mm camera! She took a lot of pictures at our family events so, I would love to have any pictures with my parents in them that you are not interested in keeping. Cherish the memories

Doan K. Nguyen Jul 23, 2019

Condolences to the entire Raab family. May Kay finally rest in peace. Kay, I wished I had a chance to come back to Kansas to see you one last time. Unfortunately, my current health situation does not allow me to travel. You were a dear and true friend to me. You were always thoughtful and kind. My memories of you and our time together working for the school district will be cherished. I miss and love you so much. Rest in peace my dear friend. Love, Doan
