Apr 13, 1948---May 01, 2019

Carol Douglas, of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2019 after a brave battle with ovarian cancer and dermatomyositis. Her spirit wanted to fight and beat the disease but in the end her body gave up and wouldn’t let her continue.

Carol was born April 13, 1948 to Richard L. and Eva Markel in East St. Louis, Illinois. Carol and her family moved to Lorain, Ohio where she lived during her formative years. While growing up in Ohio, Carol competed as a pair roller skating team with her partner. She loved skating in competitions and had many fond memories of the sport.

Carol moved to Kansas when she got married. She had two children, Constance (Connie) and Kyle. Even though she always worked, she made sure to put her children first. She was Connie’s girl scout troop leader for many years, a member of the PTA board at Bonjour Elementary School, PTA president from 1986-1988, girls’ softball coach, and the T-block neighborhood mother.

Everyone she came into contact with felt a special vibe with Carol. She made friendships through her careers at P.D. and Associates, Home Interiors, and Beautiful Outdoors Lawn & Landscape. She developed connections and was recognized for her volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and many community projects in Lenexa.

Along with her passions for gardening, cooking, and home decorating, Carol was especially devoted to her children and grandchildren. She was lucky enough to work with her son and help grow his lawn and landscape business into a success.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Richard L. Markel in 1991 and Eva Markel in 2004.

Carol is survived by her children Constance Douglas of Mission, Kansas, Kyle (Alexis) Douglas of Mission Hills, Kansashergrandsons Karson (3) and Kaden (1)her brother Richard Markel of Elyria, Ohio, and extended family and friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 9, 5-7:00 PM at Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia St., Lenexa, Kansas. Funeral Services will be Friday, May 10, at 10:00 AM at Porter Funeral Home with burial to follow at Lenexa Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to CHD Babies/Run for Little Hearts (https://www.crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/rflh2019/lexiedouglas) or The Myositis Association (https://www.myositis.org/about-myositis/types-of-myositis/dermatomyositis/).

Carol will be in all our hearts forever as a person who would brighten anyone's day with her smile and loving friendship. She went through all her trial and tribulations with a positive attitude that showed anyone who knew her what a truly amazing woman she was.

Kyle, Even though I never met your mom in person, I felt like she was a friend. She had one of those spirits that could reach out over the telephone and communicate the love and respect she felt for her family and her community and make whoever she was talking with a part of that community. She was always ready to share a funny story or a proud monent with a fellow mother or grandmother. And she was such a great listener! She accomplished much during her lifetime, but her greatest accomplishment was raising two children who loved her and supported her as much as she loved and supported them.
