Dr. David J. Hurt, 77, Shawnee, KS, passed away Monday, April 15th, 2019 peacefully at his residence. The Funeral Service will be 11:00 am Saturday, April 20th at Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS.

David was born August 24th, 1941, in Hays, Kansas, the son of James and Elsie Hurt. He was a proud Eagle Scout, achieving the highest honor in the Boy Scouts of America. David received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Counseling at Fort Hays State University. He then went on to complete his Doctorate’s in Counseling at Kansas State University.

David was preceded in death by his parents, James and Elsie Hurt. He is survived by his wife, Denise Underwood-Hurt, sister, Linda Ubelaker (Doug), children, Dean Hurt (Lori), Jana Grimm (John), Dylan Hurt (Courtney), Derek Hurt, nieces, Kelli King (David), Krisa Schneider (Joel) and grandchildren, Tori Mizell (Jeffrey), Lexi Grimm, Kami Grimm, Alli Grimm, Haleigh Hurt, and Ethan Hurt, and first great grandchild, Jay Mizell. The family has requested that guests wear bright colors as this is a celebration of a life welllived. David’s family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, love and support during this time of sorrow.

My heart went out to your family for the loss of David. I loss my mother over 10+ years ago. But I found comfort in these few scriptures. I hope they find comfort for you during this difficult time. Psalms 37:9,-11,29 9 For evil men will be done away with,j But those hoping in Jehovah will possess the earth.k 10 Just a little while longer, and the wicked will be no more;l You will look at where they were, And they will not be there.m 11 But the meek will possess the earth,n And they will find exquisite delight in the abundance 29 The righteous will possess the earth,i And they will live forever on it.j Please look up these scriptures in your own copy of the Bible. It will give you confidence you will see David again under righteous condition where he is no longer sick but restored youth and healthy. To Derek and the entire Hurt family. Please accept my deepest sympathy for the passing of your dad, father uncle and friend Mr. Hurt. While I did not know him personally, I know he raised a fine young man in Derek. May God bring you peace and joy during this time. Mr. Hurt is certainly at peace now. God bless the entire family.
