Matt was born October 11, 1973, in Topeka, KS.  When Matt was in second grade, his family moved to Fulda, Germany, where he attended school and was an active athlete playing football, wrestling, tennis and track.  Matt built relationships with his fellow American students as well as the local German community.  Matt liked to think of himself as fluent German speaker, regularly using phrases such as “Ich liebe dich” (I love you). Matt graduated high school in 1992 and then attended Kansas State University where he joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and graduated with a criminology degree in 1997.  Matt met the love of his life, wife Kelli (Kraft), at Kansas State University in 1995.

Matt and Kelli married in August of 1998 and relocated to Boise, Idaho, where they had two sons (Cole Matthew Fraas, November 1999) and (Connor David Fraas, October 2004).  While in Idaho, Matt worked for the Canyon County Sheriff's Department in corrections, patrol and as a juvenile detective. In 2005, Matt, Kelli and the boys relocated to Lenexa, Kansas where Matt worked for the Lenexa Police Department from which he medically retired in 2012.  In March of 2010, Matt and Kelli welcomed their third son, Colin Damon Fraas, completing their family. Upon retirement from the Lenexa Police Department, Matt became a full time dad, which is the hardest job of all. Matt coached the boys in soccer, baseball and basketball and was active in the their school activities.  Matt was curious, inquisitive, always in the know and constantly working to improve himself.  He recently finished his Master's Degree from Grand Canyon University and had been substitute teaching at Mission Trail Middle School for the last few years.  Matt found his second calling working with students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grade and had a passion for teaching social studies and history.

Matt and his family are members of the Church of the Resurrection, where Matt coached the Upward soccer teams, supported the church summer camps and volunteered with the children’s ministries.  Matt was always an athlete going to the gym (almost) daily and enjoyed the physical and social aspects where he developed several close friendships.  Matt was devoted to his family, loved babysitting his niece Isla, giving his sisters Lizzi and Amy a hard time, going to lunch with his dad Lou and talking daily to his brother Dave in Idaho.  Matt especially loved sharing daily devotionals with his mother Mary. Matt was a wonderful husband and father. Matt, Kelli and the boys enjoyed traveling, Friday pizza nights, going to movies, taking long walks with their dogs, pulling the occasional prank on each other, carpooling to and from and attending his boy’s various sports activities.

Matt was the guy who never met a stranger, loved to entertain and make others laugh and was always willing to give a helping hand.  Words cannot express how much Matt will be missed, as recently best described by a close family friend “Matt’s smile made life happy”.  We are blessed to know that Matt is now in heaven with our Heavenly Father and will be watching over all his loved ones.

Matt is survived by his wife, Kelli, their three sons Cole (19) currently attending the University of Kansas, Connor (14) attending Prairie Trail Middle School, and Colin (9) attending Manchester Park Elementary, his father Louis (Janet) Fraas, his mother Mary Fraas, his three siblings Amy Chapman, David Fraas, Elizabeth Fraas and many extended family and friends.

ATO Brother ,Houston ,Texas

My wife, Esra, will not be able to be there for the funeral but I will make the trip to pay my respects. I am so sorry to all of you for your loss. I spent so much time at K-State with Matt. He is one of the best ATO brothers, I ever knew and I have so much respect for the person that Matt is. I will never forget his smile and how protective he was of everyone around him. Having three boys of my own and a young daughter, It really saddens me that his boys lost their Dad so early in their young lives. I struggle to find any words to say to you all to ease your pain. Just know I am one of many that is thinking of you all and praying for you all. Jeff Thornbrugh

Spent a lot of great years with my law enforcement brother Matt. We started at the Sheriff's office together, and had some great times together. I remember the relentless smack talking to each other about football and just about any competition we could argue about. Matt was always there for me and is a great husband, father and friend. I will miss you bro, thanks for sharing your life with me...you will be missed. Love you Eron

We only knew you guys for a short time while you lived in Canada but felt blessed to have you both as friends. Every time I see the chiefs play I think of Matt and how much he loved his football even stepping up and coaching our boys. Such an amazing father, husband and friend our hearts and prayers are with you.

my son's sub teacher ,olathe ,Kansas

I am very sorry to hear of your loss and the loss of a wonderful father and teacher. My son Nick had the opportunity to have Mr. Fraas as a sub teacher and liked him very much. He would have made a wonderful SS teacher. Our family will keep you and your family in our prayers as you go through this difficult time. Nick also knew Mr. Fraas's son from school and is very sad for his lost. May our Heavenly Father lift your burdens and bring you peace in this time of loss.

My gosh, Matt. What can I say? You were such an amazing person, husband, father, brother and friend to so many. You and Kelli were there for Steve and I through so much when we were all here in Idaho. So many fun memories, football Sunday’s, summer bbq’s, weekend adventures, birthdays, holidays and overall good times. Both of our first born were raised together. What a beautiful family you and Kelli created. Thank you for saying yes to be Sierra’s godfather. Thank you to you and Kelli for hosting Savannah’s baby shower. Thank you for your years of friendship to Steve and to our family. You were there for him and I through some really tough times. Now, words can’t express the loss we feel from losing you...Gone way too soon. I pray that you sleep in the peace of Christ. And I pray for Kelli and your beautiful boys. Thank you for touching so many lives with your humor and compassion. You will be missed dearly. We love you. Love from Nikki, Sierra & Savannah Duarte in Nampa, Idaho.

Mary and all of the Fraas family. I am so very sorry to hear of Matthew's death. I want to share a poem. I hope it brings you comfort. All Is Well _Death Is Nothing At All By Henry Scott-Holland Death is nothing at all. ?It does not count. ?I have only slipped away into the next room. ?Nothing has happened. ??Everything remains exactly as it was. ?I am I, and you are you, ?and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. ?Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. ??Call me by the old familiar name. ?Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. ?Put no difference into your tone. ?Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. ??Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.?Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. ?Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. ?Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. ??Life means all that it ever meant. ?It is the same as it ever was. ?There is absolute and unbroken continuity. ?What is this death but a negligible accident? ??Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? ?I am but waiting for you, for an interval, ?somewhere very near, ?just round the corner. ??All is well. ?Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost. ?One brief moment and all will be as it was before. ?How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!
