Carl Glenn Hanks, Age: 88
Aug 19, 1930 -- Nov 25, 2018

Carl Glenn Hanks, age 88 of Shawnee, KS, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2018.  Now he begins his eternal life with his beloved Lord and Savior.  Visitation will be Friday, November 30, 2018, from 10:00 to 11:00 am, with funeral services following at 11:00 am.  The services will be held at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS 66215. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Kansas City, KS.

Carl was born August 19, 1930, in Kansas City, Kansas.  He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to everyone he met.  He never met a stranger.   He loved to talk and talk and talk.

He was a hard worker his entire life.  He worked hard starting when he was a very young boy.  Although Carl’s dad worked as a locomotive engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad, Carl and his dad raised a few chickens in Argentine and sold eggs.  He also threw the Kansas City Star from his bicycle as a kid.

He graduated from Argentine High School in 1949 and joined the United States Air Force during the Korean War.  A year later, he married Norma, his high school sweetheart.

After leaving the Air Force, Carl and Norma returned to the Kansas City area where they built a home and life together.  Carl worked as a locomotive engineer for the Burlington Northern Railroad.  After 42 years of working for the railroad, he retired in 1992.  He was able to enjoy 26 years of retirement.  At the railroad he served in various capacities for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers including Local Chairman, Vice General Chairman, and he served as Acting General Chairman for a short time. He was elected to the International Board of Appeals for several years, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

After six years of marriage, Carl and Norma had a daughter and named her Nancy Hanks because Carl Hanks was a descendant of Nancy Hanks Lincoln, the mother of Abraham Lincoln.

Carl was saved in 1967 and was baptized at Berean Baptist Church.  He served there as a deacon and an usher. Later, Carl and Norma joined Lenexa Baptist Church where they attended services and made many wonderful and lasting friendships.

Carl and Norma enjoyed traveling.  They traveled extensively in the United States including Alaska and Hawaii and around the world including England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, and Tasmania.

Twenty to forty years ago, Carl had a large garden (about ½ acre) where he grew all kinds of vegetables.  He loved to garden and give away vegetables to friends and neighbors.

Carl had a soft spot in his heart for animals.  He had many dogs and cats as pets throughout his lifetime.

He greatly enjoyed working in the yard planting trees, bushes and flowers, cutting and trimming the grass, and trimming and cutting down trees and bushes.  In recent years, Norma was afraid they weren’t going to have any forest left because of his efforts.

Nancy married Steven Alexander in 1981.  They had a daughter who they named Anne Louise Alexander.  Carl was very happy to be a grandfather.

Anne married Chris Riley in 2009.  Carl was so pleased that Chris worked for the BNSF railroad. He enjoyed sharing railroad stories with Chris.  Anne and Chris had a daughter and named her Reagan Grace Riley.  Reagan called Carl “Pops.”  He lit up whenever Reagan came through the door.  He loved being a great-grandfather.

He was so proud of his daughter, Nancy; granddaughter, Anne; and great-granddaughter, Reagan.  They were the light of his life.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Charlotte (Lovell) Hanks and sister, Dolores Walsh.  Carl is survived by his wife of 67 years, Norma (McDaniel) Hanks, daughter Nancy and her husband, Steven Alexander; granddaughter Anne and her husband Chris Riley, and great-granddaughter Reagan Grace Riley.

Carl will be greatly missed by family, friends, and all who knew him.
