Terry P. Barker, 84, died on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

He is survived by daughters Myra Barker of Olympia, Washington, Julie Barker House (Derrick) of Leawood, Kansas, and granddaughter, Katie House of Shawnee Mission, Kansas. He is preceded in death by his wife, Kay, and brother James D. Barker.

Terry was born on April 18, 1934 in Petersburg, Indiana, to Paul and Elaine (Bamberger) Barker. He graduated from Petersburg High School and joined the U.S. Navy and shortly after discharge, Terry married his high school sweetheart, Kay Knowles, in 1955. They moved to Terre Haute, Indiana, where he began his studies at Indiana State University, graduating with a degree in Speech and Language Sciences.

Terry and Kay moved to Paoli, Indiana, in 1963. Terry became the Paoli School District Speech and Hearing therapist where he worked until retiring.

He and Kay retired to Bull Shoals Lake in Arkansas where they enjoyed fishing and boating. In 2007, they relocated to the Kansas City area to be nearer to and involved in his granddaughter’s life, whom they both adored.

Terry was active in Boy Scouts for decades beginning as a summer camp director and serving as local Scoutmaster in Paoli, Indiana. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed skiing, camping, and hunting.

He was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Paoli, Indiana and more recently in the Leawood United Methodist Church (LUMC). At LUMC, where he was a regular volunteer at the community Miracle Breakfast program, at Parkwood Day School, volunteered on many church committees, attended many bible study classes and church events.

The family plans to hold a celebration of life service January 27. 2019 at 1 pm located at Leawood United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Leawood United Methodist Church.
