Sophie Grebowiec, Catholic, Polish-American, Wyandotte Democrat of Roeland Park, KS died on October 1, 2018 at Saint Luke’s Hospice House. Services on Friday, October 5 at St. Agnes Church, 5250 Mission Rd. Rosary at 9 am, followed by visitation, Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am. Internment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Sophie was born on August 21, 1922 in KCK to Peter and Josephine (Sivicki) Bortko. She was married to Mike Grebowiec for 68 years before his death in 2010. She was a member of St. Agnes Church since 1955. Sophie was always active. In her younger years, she sang in the Church Choir, was a Cub Scout Leader, served on the Church Altar Society Ways and Means Committee, and volunteered at her Church. She was a member of Rockhurst Mothers Club, St. Agnes Altar Society Sacred Heart Circle #3 and Our Lady of Fatima Circle. She was also an excellent seamstress and quilter. She enjoyed golfing and bowling for over 50 years. She was a member of Milburn Country Club since 1960, the second longest tenured member, playing golf until age 82. Sophie lived a beautiful life and had a deep faith in God and devotion to Mary. She loved her family and friends, telling jokes, playing bingo, bunco, and bridge (her favorite pastime). She was also an avid reader. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike, son Gary, sister Bernice Bukaty, brothers Stanley and Edward Bortko. She is survived by her son, Michael, daughter Vicki Smith (Tom), granddaughters Valerie Beachy (Bobby) and Madeline Cook (Kevin), and sister-in-law Delores Bortko. Her granddaughters gave their Babka so much joy. The family thanks Sophie’s priests, Fr Jerry Arano-Ponce, Msgr Lawrence Bukaty (nephew), and Fr Bill Porter for their religious and spiritual support.
